IPMA WARN OF INCREASED TEMPERATURES AND FIRE RISK IN THE ALGARVE AND BEJA TUESDAY 7TH JULY

The Fire risk in the Algarve is MAXIMUM in seven municipalities, shown in dark brown on the map with several others, including in Beja district just to the north, at VERY HIGH.

Temperatures throughout the area are increasing and forecast in most areas in the shade to be in the region on 37-41 C in the Algarve (Alcoutim 41C) and just across the border in Mertola and Ourique to reach 42C.

Along with this the minimum humidity levels are below 20% and in Mertola forecast to be as low as 9.5%

The risk of rural fires especially in the northern parts of the Algarve is extreme. Please therefore take all measures to prevent rural fires.

If you see smoke call 112 IMMEDIATELY – do not assume someone else has done so.

Coupled with this the high temperatures can pose a risk to health especially those taking physical exercise outdoors. This should be avoided at the hottest times of the day from mid- day onwards.

The Government has this morning published a Decree Law 6756-C/2020 concerning “Extension of air traffic restrictive measures to and from Portugal, with certain exceptions”

PORTUGAL SPAIN BORDER REOPENS 1ST JULY 2020

CEREMONY TAKING PLACE

Three and a half months after Portugal and Spain closed land borders, as a contingency measure to mitigate the effects of the pandemic, the doors opened again last night.

The reopening of the border is being signalled, this Wednesday morning, in an official ceremony without speeches The program is divided between Badajoz and Elvas and includes include Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, King Felipe VI and the heads of the Portuguese and Spanish Governments , António Costa and Pedro Sánchez

In a message shared on Twitter, before the official ceremonies, António Costa considered the reopening of the border a reunion between neighbours "brothers and friends" who will have more weight if they are side by side in the European Union.

"On this open frontier depends our shared prosperity and a common destiny in the European project," wrote the Prime Minister, who considers it "essential for both countries that contacts gradually return to the dimension and dynamics before the outbreak of the pandemic"

The end of mandatory confinement has arrived - The New Normal during reopening.

The Algarve region, as plenty of other places across the world, has suffered a lot with the suspension of tourism and closure of most economic activities. Although the region has seen relatively few cases of Covid-19 (just over 350 confirmed) and very few deaths, its people has followed in an exemplary manner the rules of confinement to stop the spread of the virus.

As of May 18, Portugal allows the reopening of most businesses and economic activity within the rules and health protection measures established by the National Health Agency (DGS) regarding the Covid-19 epidemic.

Nurseries and kindergartens are now open and students can return to classes at different stages. Restaurants and retailers in general can receive customers in their establishments and operate according to defined standards, reducing their occupancy, making the use of a face mask mandatory and providing disinfecting gel to customers and employees. The use of terraces for restaurants that have the space is encouraged.

Most hotels and holiday apartments begin to reopen during the month of June. Here, strict sanitary rules are also applied, such as the reduction of capacity so that the rooms will not be occupied right after the guests leave and buffet service will not be allowed in the restaurants. There will be a series of cleaning equipment available throughout the different areas of the hotels.

In any case, the use of a mask continues to be recommended in all places where people are found, especially in closed areas and physical distancing between the population should remain the norm in the near future.

However, there are still uncertainties about other aspects of the return of tourism, especially regarding details on the rules for the practice of leisure activities provided by many companies in the Algarve. The reopening of land borders with Spain and the return of flights by airlines that usually bring tourists in large numbers has not yet been confirmed, but it is said that it could be as early as mid-June.

We wish we will all be back in business soon and hope to welcome national and foreign visitors as soon as possible.

Embora a região tenha visto relativamente poucos casos de Covid-19 (pouco mais de 350 confirmados) e muito poucas mortes, o seu povo seguiu de maneira exemplar as regras de confinamento para impedir a propagação do vírus.

A partir do dia 18 de maio Portugal permite a reabertura da maior parte dos negócios e o arranque das atividades económicas, dentro das regras e medidas de proteção sanitária estabelecidas pela Direção Geral da Saúde face à epidemia do Covid-19.

As creches e os infantários já podem abrir e os alunos regressam às aulas de forma faseada. A restauração e o comércio em geral podem receber os clientes nos seus estabelecimentos e operar seguindo normas bem definidas, reduzindo a capacidade, afastando as mesas, tornando o uso de máscara facial obrigatório e disponibilizando gel desinfetante aos clientes e funcionários. É incentivado o uso de esplanadas para os restaurantes que dispõem do espaço.

Os hotéis e apartamentos de férias começam a reabrir, em boa parte, já durante o mês de junho. Aqui também são aplicadas regras sanitárias estritas, como a redução da capacidade, de forma a que os quartos não voltem a ser ocupados logo após a saída dos hóspedes, e não será permitido o serviço de buffet nos restaurantes. Haverá toda uma série de equipamento de higienização distribuído pelas diferentes áreas da unidade hoteleira.

Em todo o caso, continua a ser recomendado o uso de máscara em todos os sítios onde se encontram pessoas, sobretudo em zonas fechadas, e o distanciamento físico entre a população deve manter-se como norma nos próximos tempos.

Continuam, no entanto, a haver incertezas sobre outros aspetos da retoma da atividade turística, sobretudo nos detalhes das regras para a prática das atividades de lazer disponibilizadas por muitas empresas no Algarve. A reabertura das fronteiras terrestres com Espanha e o regresso dos voos das companhias aéreas que costumam trazer os turistas em grande número ainda não têm data confirmada, mas consta-se que poderia ser já a partir de meadas de junho.
