About the Trainer
Jenny Marie Höglund holds a Masters in Education and has been a Montessori guide for more than 40 years. Jenny is an AMI trainer for 6-12 years and 12-18 years. She is AMI 3- 6 years and 6-12 years trained. In 1994, Jenny founded Montessoriskolan Lära för livet for children from 1 - 16 years old. Why don't toddlers share?

Toddlers are naturally egocentric, or in other words they think only of themselves, with little regards to the thoughts and feeling of others. Although this would be a negative trait in adults, for toddlers it is developmentally normal.

The ability to understand the viewpoint of others, and have empathy for them, is commonly referred to as ‘Theory of Mind’ (ToM). ToM explains the understanding that we are all individuals with our own thoughts, beliefs and feelings and we each have a unique experience of life.

Psychologists have long questioned the age at which ToM exists, with the current view being that it begins to develop in infancy, BUT there is a marked difference in development between 3 and 4 year olds. Where most 3 year olds struggle with understanding that others have different thoughts, feelings, and experiences to them, 4 year olds show a marked increase in understanding.

Research illustrates that 3 year olds struggle with something known as ‘False Belief’; the ability to understand that others may believe something that is not true. An exampe of this test is using a sweet box to disguise unexpected contents, e.g.: a chocolate candy box containing a paperclip. The experimenter would show the 3 year old the box and then show them the unexpected content. They would then ask the child “what do you think your mummy or daddy (who were not in the room when the child was shown the paperclip) will say is in this box?”. Most 3 year olds will answer “a paperclip!”. Of course, the correct answer here is the parent will say “the box contains sweets/candy!” - and that is the answer that children will most usually give once they are 4 years old. Give the experiment a try with your child and see what answer they say?

How does this impact parents of toddlers?

Understanding the development of ToM can help parents to reset their social expectations of their child to something more developmentally appropriate. For instance it is developmentally appropriate for toddlers to lack empathy for others and be being unwilling to share.

A toddler who isn't keen on sharing isn't being naughty, they are simply being a toddler! They will grow to develop ToM, empathy and a willingness to share as they grow and take social cues from our role modelling (although a lot of adults still aren't very good at sharing!).

Spring sprang in our session today! We planted our own flower to take home, did some gardening in the sensory area, painted a butterfly and made a blossom tree using bubble wrap. Phew! (And this isn’t everything!)

There was such a buzz in the air today at our session, I came out feeling so happy ☺️
The St. Patrick’s Day activities developed so many skills without the little ones even realising! This is the way learning can be- fun and relaxing. When we’re relaxed, we retain so much more.

I’m VERY logical so I learn a lot from my daughter who has the most amazing imagination. Today, she found some beads for the Christmas tree, a fishing rod and went fishing for them. She then found an old hair band and asked me to use the glue gun to make a new hairband. During my sessions, I strive to develop both logic and imagination through my activities. Today’s Wildlife theme was a hit! Sensory play, matching animal footprints, designing their own snake and taking the giraffe for a walk were only a few of the activities I set for today.
