Already weakened by disease, starvation and lack of medical care during encirclement. they sent on death matches 75,000 survivors die within three months of capture to prison camp and later to labour camp all over the Soviet union. Some 35000 were eventually sent on transports of which 17,000 did not survive.
Most die of wounds, disease, cold overwork and mistreatment and some were kept in city to help rebuild. The Axis suffer 850,000 total casualties, wounded, killed, captured among all branches of the Germans armed forces and it allies; 400,000 Germans, 200,000 Romanians, 130,000 Italian and 120,000 Hungarian were killed in war.
