REFUSED WILL PERFORM THEIR LAST EVER SWEDISH FESTIVAL SHOW AT WAY OUT WEST!

For a few years during the 90s, all eyes were on Umeå—at least for those who loved heavy music. The reason was the uniquely vibrant hardcore scene that filled the city's youth centers with angry young people every week. At the heart of it all was the band Refused, whose aftermath turned out to be the perfect breeding ground for hungry bands dreaming of one day being as good and significant as their idols. They never quite managed. With their epoch-defining album The Shape of Punk to Come from 1998, Refused not only changed the Swedish scene's perception of what heavy music could be but also impacted the entire world.

Last year, the immensely influential band announced that it was time to fold things up and once again be "fu***ng dead." The farewell was set to begin at Rosendal in Stockholm, but shortly before the event, frontman Dennis Lyxzén suffered a heart attack, forcing the cancellation of the performance that was meant to be their last at a Swedish festival. This spring, the farewell instead kicks off with a North American tour, but a final goodbye to the Swedish festival audience is also on the schedule—at Way Out West in Gothenburg.

Sometimes things don’t go as planned. Last year’s highly anticipated concert with Queens of the Stone Age had to be canceled due to health reasons, but now the singer, guitarist, and the band’s main architect, Josh Homme, is ready for round two. As if that weren’t enough, we’re also adding the godfather of punk, the ever-relevant Iggy Pop, to the bill. In other words, a two-pack of influential rock is coming to Way Out West in Gothenburg, August 7–9!

This year we’re launching a new stage for sperm and eggs. Here’s why. To stay relevant, new fans are crucial. New generations of fans are vital for keeping both artists and music festivals alive and kicking. This year, we’ve added an additional stage to help create future fans of great music by ‘injecting’ live recordings by the headlining artists into their DNA at the earliest stage possible—before they even develop into fetuses. In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a medical procedure that involves joining a woman’s egg and a man’s sperm in a laboratory dish. It helps millions get pregnant every year. Recent studies show that music improves the fertilization rate during an IVF process. So, in collaboration with renowned designer @lovehulten, we’ve created a unique, fully functional stage that will play live recordings from Way Out West’s headlining artists for what might be the largest, yet smallest crowd in history: sperm and eggs getting ”ready to rumble” in laboratory.
