Are you unsure about what the dress code on the invitation means? No worries! Here are the dress codes explained:
White Tie: For men, this always means a tailcoat. It’s important that the bow tie and waistcoat are white when attending a wedding. Women should wear a long, elegant evening gown, and it’s acceptable to wear a low neckline. Long gloves are also recommended if the dress is off-the-shoulder.
Folk Costume: This attire is suitable for all major celebrations and weddings where white tie is requested. It can be worn by both men and women.
Formal Dress: Men wear a tailcoat, uniform, or festive version of a folk costume. Women wear an elegant evening gown or the festive version of a folk costume.
Suit: Traditionally, this means a dark suit for men, but the rules have become more relaxed. A light suit is appropriate during the lighter seasons, and sometimes even a blazer with separate trousers is acceptable, as long as the accessories are neat. Women typically wear a short dress, a suit, or sometimes elegant long trousers. An evening gown, even a long one, can be worn if you know that the male guests are expected to wear dark suits.
Dark Suit: This always means a dark blue or dark grey suit. Women should wear a more elegant short dress or sometimes a long gown.
Tuxedo: Traditionally, a tuxedo is not worn at weddings, but this rule has become less strict as many weddings today specify tuxedos as the dress code. If the invitation says ”Black Tie,” then a tuxedo should be worn! For women, tuxedo attire means an evening gown, long or short, strapless or with long sleeves.
No Dress Code Specified: This technically implies white tie, but since not everyone knows this tradition, it’s wise to check with the hosts to clarify what they expect.
