How can a city prepare for the floods of the future?💦

Few people know this better than Jonas Althage, Stockholm’s Urban Flood Strategist, who coordinates and develops how the city works with flood mitigation. With 15 years of experience in climate adaptation and flood management in over 60 municipalities, Jonas is at the forefront of shaping resilient urban strategies.
On 16 October at Kulturhuset Foajé 3, Jonas will give a keynote and then take part in a dialogue with artist Germaine Sanders — where art meets science to explore new perspectives on climate resilience and urban water challenges.

Exploring the intersections of urban planning, cultural planning, and water management.🚥

Stockholm-based architect and urban planner Johannes Tovatt will lead and participate in the dialogue “A Dialogue between Urban Planning, Cultural Planning & Water Management” alongside Lia Ghilardi and Astrid Rompolt. The session will explore how urban and cultural strategies can integrate with water management to address contemporary social and spatial challenges.
Johannes began his career in the office of the late Ralph Erskine in the mid-1980s and later became partner in Erskine Tovatt Architects, which merged with Sweco Architects in 2019. With extensive experience across Europe, his work spans urban space to rural landscapes, policy to design-tools, and academia to practice, always focusing on shaping and communicating shared visions for resilient, socially engaged environments.

Art, ecology, and civic imagination come together in the work of Jenny Marketou.💚

Greek-born, New York–based artist Jenny Marketou creates socially engaged projects that merge art, science, technology, and community to reimagine our relationship to water, earth, and non-human species. Her work has been presented internationally at major exhibitions such as Documenta 14, Manifesta, the São Paulo Biennale, Museo Reina Sofía, and the New Museum.
On 14 October at Vrak – Museum of Wrecks, during the River Cities in Stockholm event, Jenny will present “In the Belly of a Garden”, a sculptural environment originally created in Seestadt, Vienna as part of Turning the Tide. Bringing soil and water together, the work pays homage to the wetlands of the Danube River and reflects on how waterways connect ecology, architecture, and human imagination..🛶

Workshop: Floating Value & Future Flow ✏️🌊

On 14 October at Vrak, as part of River Cities Network in Stockholm, architect and artist Germaine Sanders will lead an open workshop.

Germaine brings a unique perspective at the intersection of engineering and the arts, with a career spanning architecture, urban development, and teaching at TU Delft(2000–2025). She is also the founder of nomadAcademy®, which uses drawing as a tool to visualize complexity, spark creativity, and inspire shared values in international climate collaborations.

This practical session invites everyone—no drawing skills needed—to explore drawing as a method of visual thinking, creative collaboration, and clear communication. Through simple exercises, participants will discover how to structure loose thoughts, strengthen ideas, and build collective insights.
