Carrying on the legacy of the company’s acclaimed founder and choreographer Ushio Amagatsu, Sankai Juku presents his last choreographic work. TOTEM bears all the hallmarks of an Amagatsu work: minimalist yet elegant; a stunning visual spectacle created by the performers’ spellbinding physicality.

The international premiere of this work is presented as part of da:ns focus – Connect Asia Now (CAN), a weekend that spotlights contemporary dance works by Asian artists focusing on distinct voices and creative impulses from the region.

Announcing the 2024 programmes for da:ns focus – Connect Asia Now (CAN)! A gathering of distinct voices and creative impulses from Asia, this second edition presents new dance productions which engage deeply with the embodiment of ritual, resistance and metamorphosis.

Acclaimed butoh company Sankai Juku returns to Singapore with TOTEM - Void and Height, the final, spellbinding work of late choreographer and pioneer Ushio Amagatsu.

Using the broomstick as a metaphor, Magic Maids by Eisa Jocson and Venuri Perera unsettles oppressive power structures through an embodied inquiry into the entanglements between witch hunts and female labour.

Multi-disciplinary artist Joshua Serafin draws from the spiritual, pre-colonial roots of The Philippines in PEARLS, a dance production that transforms traumatic histories into future-forward possibilities.
Look forward to these three stellar performances happening from 4 – 6 Oct, save your spot now at www.esplanade.com/dans

As part of the Contemporary Performing Arts Research Residency 2024 supported by National Arts Council Singapore, the residents of this programme will be sharing more about their research projects through open access programmes. On 24 May, two of our residents will be presenting aspects of their research anchored in dance and movement:

In Flowers, Jared Jonathan Luna tapped members of Singapore’s ballroom and voguing community to explore place making practices both in virtual and physical contexts, as part of his larger research on how social media has shaped dance practice.

Nanako Nakajima's work aims to empower excluded dancers’ bodies, promoting a dance dramaturgy that introduces alternative aesthetics. In this session, Nanako will share about her writing project which she developed during her residency, centered on the dance dramaturgy of ageing.
