On, November 18, 2024, Utqiagvik, Alaska, experienced its final sunset of the year at 1:27 p.m. The northernmost city in the United States will remain in darkness until January 22, 2025, as it enters the polar night.

During this period, the town will have no direct sunlight but will still experience a few hours of civil twilight, where dim light fills the sky. Situated deep within the Arctic Circle, Utqiagvik is the only U.S. city to undergo this extreme phenomenon, where, at times, the sun doesn’t rise or set for more than two months.

The town’s mayor, Asisaun Toovak, says that while people mostly stay indoors during the winter months, it’s also a time to rest. Despite the challenges, the town’s community, with many families having lived there for generations, thrives in the long winters, making the best of the long darkness and enjoying the Northern Lights.

As the weather turns cold, it’s easy for young footballers (and parents) to consider missing a session to stay home in the warm 🥶

However, we would really encourage players to wrap up warm and come along.

Building resilience in young people is one of footballs great gifts. It teaches them grit, teamwork and how to keep going when things don’t go their way. These are life skills that last far beyond the game.

But… resilience isn’t built in comfort zones. Braving the cold for football training teaches young players to push through challenges—whether it’s cold weather, tough matches, or setbacks in life.

Our advice would be to bundle up, get your boots on and show our kids that resilience starts with showing up 💪⚽

We wrote this post as a general point about the importance of showing up, using the recent cold snap in England as an example. We are not advocating playing or travelling in dangerous conditions. The welfare of young players will always be our highest priority and common sense should be applied.
