02/28/2024 RELEASE DATE After long delays, we are very proud to release the definitive “all killer/no filler” collection of the amazing Tok Yathraa’s work, culled from his wildly fun and original thematic albums that center around Asian folklore/horror.

The Singapore based artist explores the mythology and creatures of Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, etc and blends the tales into a music that truly falls under the misappropriated genre of WORLD. It’s metal, it’s folk, it’s rock, it’s heavy, it’s acoustic, it’s just plain GREAT. You’ll hear traces of Mercyful Fate, Sepultura, Traditional melodies of the indigenous, tropical folk pop, and even the chaos of Faxed Head.

It’s RAW and it RULES.
And we have it on good authority that the writers of the Netflix show Mr. Midnight did a deep dive into Tok Yathraa’s work for inspiration.

The Pocong said so!

This is a very limited pressing of 200 CDs to be sold worldwide. Includes a never-before-heard bonus track.

Interview by Tok Yathraa representing Yathraa Cult Asia and Bands For Bands International.

𝐃𝐨 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐖𝐚𝐧𝐭?

I have witnessed Scarlet Riot live for a few times. No doubt the band is filled with energy, passion, dedication and discipline. Scarlet Riot is a 4 piece band. Three elegant ladies and of course, a thorn among them.

Let's start with 𝘾𝙤𝙧𝙖-𝙇𝙚𝙞𝙜𝙝, a lady with beautiful colourful hair. She's a strong woman who fights countless battles and demons in disguise. The frontwoman of the band will catch your attention when she starts singing. She's also raised mental health awareness issues.

The riff maker of the band. The one whose hair resembles a queen's crown. 𝙎𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙡𝙖 isn't just any ordinary guitarist of the band. She's a teacher who taught guitar lessons at Yamaha Music School. A fine lady who plays the guitar without a doubt like a child who memorizes the nursery rhymes. She isn't just a guitarist or a teacher. She is well versed in singing as well. I've seen her sang in multiple open mics. I must admit she has a different kind of technique in singing. I used to call her "The one who whacks her guitar and not giving a single damn about it." She may look soft but wait till you see her with a guitar. She's performed and engaged herself in multiple bands to express her love for music. I've jammed with her once. She played the drum and came out with delicious beats. We clicked instantly and came out with a self-composed song.

Moving forward, the drummmmaaaahhhh!!! A lady drummaaahhhhh (No, not drama but the drummer.) 𝙉𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣 sort of the quiet one (As what I saw) in the band. I remembered that she only spoke a few words when I asked her something. Nonetheless, I was surprised that she's the drummer of the band when the first time I saw Scarlet Riot performed. I can't register how good she is until now. She's pretty good. Get it? Pretty, good, and pretty good. You know what I am trying to say, don't you?

Lastly, we have king 𝙆𝙞𝙛. The bassist of the band. Bang bing b**g bang bang bang bang. Hahaha!!! Nope! That's not a Phrygian dominant bassline but you know a bassist always hit the right spot.

Kif is a humble and a good bassist. How do I define a good bassist? Well, I might be wrong here but when he joined Scarlet Riot he proves his skills on and off stage.

Like I have said before Scarlet Riot is a band full of dedication and discipline in music.

They must have chosen the best out of the best. Of course, every band must have this ideology.

Scarlet Riot released their single on 1st May 2020 called:

"𝙄 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙄 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩."

Well, I know what I want, do you?

The song depicts a woman who wants to express her feelings for a guy.

A guy who is too hot to resist, whom she wants more and more each second to the extent she's willing to surrender or take control of this guy.

Who's this guy? Why is he special?

He seems to be the dominant one but at the same time, maybe not so dominant. Are they concealing their affection?

What if the man didn't get the woman's message? The man is making this woman going insane unknowingly.

𝙄𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙤𝙧 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙤𝙗𝙨𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣?

Is she a psychopath with a hidden agenda because of her rejected attempt to win this man's heart?

What if this man is attached, engaged or married?

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙬𝙤𝙢𝙖𝙣 𝙞𝙨 𝙖𝙡𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙮 𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙖 𝙢𝙖𝙣 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙨𝙝𝙚'𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙮 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙜𝙚?

What if both of them are not getting any satisfaction from their partner? What if in the midst they found someone or saw someone that fits their missing puzzle pieces?

Desire, everyone has it, even I have it.

Like Lucifer's favourite question,
"what is it that you truly desire?"

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙨𝙛𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣?

No one knows the answer to satisfaction till now. Even couples who have been married for years aren't satisfied with their partners.

There is a whole list of dissatisfaction, discontent and displeasure.

Here are some:

𝙇𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚, 𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙤𝙛 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙖𝙞𝙙, 𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙤𝙛 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚, 𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙤𝙛 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣, 𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙤𝙛 𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜, 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙮, 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙨 𝙘𝙖𝙣'𝙩 𝙗𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙫𝙚𝙨, 𝙗𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤𝙡𝙙 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙗𝙚 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙡𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢 𝙗𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙫𝙚𝙨, 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙤𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧, 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝 𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙧 𝙢𝙖𝙮𝙗𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙖𝙗𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙨𝙚𝙭.

We all know all these are liabilities.

What's yours?

How long will she continue to have these thoughts? She must have been clouded by promises, assurance or maybe her faith to continue in a relationship that does not benefit her. Deep in her heart, she knows 𝙨𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙜𝙪𝙮 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙣𝙚𝙧.

There are many reasons to leave but there are certain reasons not to leave too. Especially if a couple has been together for years.

Of course, the next guy wouldn't be perfect like the previous but can one predict what is the true form of happiness and when will one get it?

You have to seek it. If you get it, grasp of the happiness, and work together to sustain it, grow it, and nurture it. This goes vice versa.

Some of you might think the otherwise of this song. I am writing this based on my own experience. An experience that I will never forget until the day I die.

For some reason, people might take this song as a date night chakalaka boom boom song. I am not saying it's wrong. *chuckles*

Life is nothing but a dream.

𝘼𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙝𝙪𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙣𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙧 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙝𝙪𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙫𝙚𝙨 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬?

Before you listen to this song, there's something I want you to do. I want you to listen to this song and let your imagination run around your mind. It's fun if you have another opinion about this song.

𝙏𝙤 𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙤𝙬𝙣.

Lastly, I'll give 8/10 for this song. Production-wise is good but a bit of clarity is needed for Kif's bass. With all due respect, the band have their reasons to why they wanted Kif's bass tone to sound as it is but I certainly think if there is more clarity and if the tone is a bit sharper it will give the song further detail.

Tok Yathraa’s Spine-Tingling 𝑴𝑨𝑵𝑨𝑵𝑨𝑵𝑮𝑮𝑨𝑳!

We personally love the idea of poetizing an album apportion to a topic. A huge Kudos to Tok Yathraa for procuring everyone with this mythical journey through music. This is the second album we are reviewing and we, ourselves are comprehending about these mythical creatures through the music.

The music evokes a sense of eeriness and fear especially if you have a curiosity and fear of the unknown. A "𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒈𝒂𝒍" is a "Vampire" / Bat-Winged like feminine creature believed to haunt pregnant women and feeds on their foetus while they sleep at night. This repugnant creature is believed to exist in the fabled tales of the Philippines.

This album is a crisp 4 song album with coruscating artwork and a lot of discipline taken to write the lyrics and the information about the "This album is a crisp 4 song album with coruscating artwork and a lot of discipline taken to write the lyrics and the information about the "𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒈𝒂𝒍."

𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝟒 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫-𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐬

1) The one who separates
2) She is a ruthless creature
3) Manananggal; and
4) Death of a Manananggal

1) 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒐 𝒔𝒆𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒔 - 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒈𝒂𝒍 has the ability to separate her torso from her legs. We assume, she requires the legs to walk unassumingly amongst humans and when she flies - it doesn’t need its legs. Power-Packed riffs with eerie growling vocals are what you can expect from this song. One proposition would be to listen to the album with the lyrics in front of you. It is possible to actually visualize this creature.

2) 𝑺𝒉𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝒂 𝒓𝒖𝒕𝒉𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 - sally forth with a slurping sound. Just try and imagine what she could be slurping?? We hold high for Tok Yathraa’s use of sound effects in his music like the rumbling thunder. The riff on "She Is A Ruthless Creature" can surely leave you to do nothing but headbanging. The music reminded (Mr Abishek) of a band called "Cradle of Filth" and to (William Jr.) the band called “Arch Enemy.” The clean guitar strumming towards the end with harmonised riffs brings a much-needed drop to the music. Almost complimenting the aftermath of the causatum caused by the "Manananggal" in one night. The shredding on the solo is great and build-up to the headbanging riff is amazing. As a guitarist, (Mr Abishek) and a bassist (William Jr.) - I would watch out for the slightly flat bends and unintended microtonal sustains when ending a phrase.

3) 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒈𝒂𝒍 - Is a song about the actual mise en scène when the "𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒈𝒂𝒍" has been spotted by the villagers. It is situated in the village she is attacking and is spreading her rat's nest. The 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒈𝒂𝒍 is supposed to have very captivating beauty when she is in human form. The villagers wonder - how can someone so beautiful become so demonic. The song conveys that very well through its music. Nice syncopated riffs compliment the song beautifully.

4) 𝑫𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒉 𝒐𝒇 𝒂 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒈𝒂𝒍 - Loved the swooping and swooshing sounds at the beginning of the "Manananggal" flying around in the beginning. We believe that the song conveys the method to kill the Manananggal. We are guessing when she is separated from her legs and she is flying around, she can be struck with a spear and ripped apart. One of the confounding riffs to headbang to.

As a musician and music teacher from across India (Mr Abishek) & former soundman (William Jr.) We both agree that this is a very well-produced album overall. The stupefied tone for riffs, It is the kind of music we would listen to whilst doing some heavy lifting in the gym or speeding on a highway (but maybe not at night, lol).

Tok Yathraa has proven nothing is impossible. He is by far one of the Asian musicians who came out with an idea to compose something footing on mythical dark creatures.

We certainly recommend to everyone all over the continents to dig his music, buy his stuff and support him. He is a one-man show and you do not want to miss it!

𝐀𝐧 𝐚𝐥𝐛𝐮𝐦 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐉𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐚 𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐝 - 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫: 𝐏𝐨𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐠 - 𝐓𝐨𝐤 𝐘𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐚𝐚.

Imagine that you are privy to visitors from a parallel realm. You are able to witness these supernatural experiences in a dark cave of a remote village or island or a dark & dimly lit corner in your house. The experience over there is meant to last for about 50 to 55 minutes. The realm opens with sounds of ethereal chanting. The song is ‘Gula Gula’ and it sounds like an invocation of sorts to a Shrouded Ghost “𝑷𝒐𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒈” in the Javanese mythology.

The album definitely has its roots in Javanese folk and it has been fused with Rock / Metal Music.

You can see a very “Scorpions (The Band)” like influence in the second song – ‘𝑲𝒂𝒖 𝑷𝒆𝒎𝒃𝒖𝒏𝒖𝒉" which means “𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑲𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒓.” It has been composed in a ballad form and is slightly progressive in nature. Chronologically speaking, it is a great song to follow the first song as it slowly raises the tempo and sets the heart beating a little faster; almost unfolding the story that "𝑷𝒐𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒈” has been invoked and is praised with the title of “𝑲𝒂𝒖 𝑷𝒆𝒎𝒃𝒖𝒏𝒖𝒉."

Well, what would you expect after an invocation like that?? “𝑰 𝒔𝒆𝒆 𝑷𝒐𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆.” Of Course! He has to come and with all his might and glory!! The song is just like that. Very “Ozzy Osbourne / Rob Zombie” styled heavy rock music with an eerie overlay.

I do not take anything away from Tok Yathraa by comparing his music style to other artists. I am stating the same so that first-time listeners can know what to expect and have an enhanced & enriching experience of his music.

Let me build on this experience further… “𝑷𝒐𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒈” has appeared and he seems to do be bouncing eerily only to sway you momentarily before he unleashes his wrath. He dances to the folk music and then “Metalizes” it with a very heavy metal riff. Aggression that makes you want to flee but Fear that freezes you. The track is called “𝑷𝒐𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝑳𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒂𝒕" which means “𝑱𝒖𝒎𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑺𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒅𝒆𝒅 𝑮𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒕” – The singing in voices in chorus all expressed from one voice represents the voices of tormented souls who can only speak what the host speaks. The souls express through those voices and screaming emotions because they can’t say what they want to say.

The guitar solos/riffs/interludes show a good understanding of the instrument and have been layered in the correct places.

𝑨 “𝑷𝒐𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒈” 𝒊𝒔 𝒃𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒂 𝒈𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒂 𝒉𝒖𝒎𝒂𝒏 𝒘𝒉𝒐 𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒃𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝒔𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒅.

Humans are curious even in their darkest moments. I love the use of the guitar arpeggios and the crying sounds of a woman along with them interspersed with sounds of Thunder. It is the highlight of the song followed by a heavy metal riff where the thoughts are totally left to your imagination.

Thus presenting, “𝑼𝒏𝒃𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑯𝒊𝒔 𝑲𝒏𝒐𝒕.”

Where there is fear, there is similarly a place to find hope and that is where one can source immense strength.

“𝑨𝒌𝒖 𝑻𝒂𝒌 𝑻𝒂𝒌𝒖𝒕” is about facing this “𝑷𝒐𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒈”. The song displays the sound of courage displayed while experiencing this encounter.

At this point in the album, as a witness one has completed disassociated with the human time and space concept. There is acceptance and dialogue, albeit in a manner that is supernatural and eerie in nature. There is an overall tone of aggression but there is also huge curiosity, discovery and some form of self-reflection. This is what I construe from the song “𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒐𝒖𝒍 𝒐𝒇 𝒎𝒚 𝑷𝒐𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒈” and the journey into the album this far.

“𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝑫𝒊𝒅𝒏’𝒕 𝑩𝒖𝒓𝒚 𝑴𝒆 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒍𝒚.” This piece is so self-explanatory. The end result of all such encounters is the fact that the “Ghosts” usually have unfinished business, a pending desire or an incomplete ritual. The angst of the incomplete ritual is expressed vehemently in this song.

“𝑰 𝒃𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒂 𝑮𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒕𝒍𝒚 𝑪𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆” starts with the fastest Riff in the album but eventually it seems to drop to half time. It’s still heavy but would have been nice to have some more aggression. Here one has completely surrendered to the underworld and feels transformed. Very understandable. Seems to be like the motive of unfulfilled souls – to drag other souls into their realm and share the darkness of suffering.

The album is a great experience for people who are intrigued by the Netherworld. The Last song, very aptly named "𝑬𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒇 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒕𝒆𝒓”
seems to re-open the portal and transfer the souls back but leaving the witness with a desire to experience it all over again. The screaming and growling with haunting voices and eerie choral backgrounds stay with the witness for hours and days even after the experience.

To conclude, A great use of nature effects, folk motifs and the overall genre of Rock & Metal. A critical point of evaluation is the overall mix. It needs a better mix where the vocals are more in the front and the overall balance between the other instrumental arrangements needs another perspective for sure.

One of the most beautiful write up about Chapter: Pocong that I've ever read. Fist Of Agony really went into details of each song, bit by bit yet letting you in on what you are going to hear and going to face. This is what we all need, a dedicated and unbiased writer to our local musicians, no nonsense attitude, no "Oh you're part of my cliques, so you're in" kind of things and the truth.
