Little Shop of Horrors

Being able to design this show has been a dream come thru ever since Dream Academy did the production more than 10years ago. From the start to the end, it challenged me as a designer, as a wardrobe manager to greater heights. So proud of my team who did all the quick changes for the show.

This show will always hold a special place in my heart.

Sometimes, things happen for a reason and we just have to trust the process.

StoryTime:
2 weeks before we opened this show, we had costume fitting. So normally before a fitting, my team and I will have to check and prep all the costumes. Ordering and sourcing would have been done at least a month in advance.
Batch 1 of costumes arrived, we prepped and delivered to rehearsal space. Now only waiting for Batch 2. Me flying to Bangkok to have the suits made and brought back in less than 72hrs hours.
So happily I came back from bkk with batch 2. At the same time, the last few pieces of my order came in. When I opened my packages...SH*T! I actually bought a grey suit for Ben le..... So there I was with 2 grey suits, and only 1 was needed. So i quietly packed away the unused suit.
Now, fast forward... we were bumping in for the show at SOTA when the news came that TJ would need to play the role of Mr Mushnik. Even though TJ brought in his clothes, it was too trendy. Now this was already Thursday and we open the next day, Friday. So I thought.... nvm la. Make do 1st. Later than find solutions coz I still have other things to worry about (Like the many many sequins and crystals that I chose to hand paste on).
Late in the night, I remembered. Didn't I have a spare suit? I informed my team to check the 1st thing they reach venue and voila! I did have that spare grey suit. it was even better, I actually ordered a 3 piece suit. Just nice for Mr Mushnik character. My team fitted TJ and I have to say.... it fitted so well, I only need to shorten the pants hem. And the rest is history.

As a designer, we get our inspirations from what we see, what we do. Orin Scrivello's logo was inspired by a biker jacket that I saw when I was on the way to work for Porsche Singapore 2024.
I always knew I wanted to diamonte the logo but I needed a template to work on it. I remembered I sketched out roughly what I wanted and I let my logo creater Ayuni do the rest and the rest is history.

So grateful to SingTheatre for giving me the opportunity to design the show and having my team in to manage the show.

I could not have done the show without my team (Fatin, Fa'iqah, ZanJia, Ayuni and Cecilia) who help me in so many ways especially hand pasting the many many sequins and crystals on the costumes and Ayuni who help me with Botanist and Orin logos.

Happy New Year!

Beginning of the year is always a harder time for Costume Rental shops so we decided to pivot this year to help increase our revenue to help with the store's expenses.

Ushering Chinese New Year 2024,
we came out with 3 goodies to share with everyone.

1. Pineapple Tarts
Homemade Nyonya Pineapple tarts with real hand chopped pineapple filling.

2. Prosperity Gold
For all those Pineapple Tart pastry lovers. Balls of Golden pastry baked to perfection.

3. Sugee Cookies
Family recipe. A lovely delight for all young at heart. Crumbly with a nice milky taste. (we do not add milk in this recipe at all.)

Costumes are a integral part of any performance. How do you ensure that while we still have beautiful costumes onstage, we are also at the same time thinking about saving the planet? About sustainability?

With a clear vision, some new materials and new touches, we created something new from something old.

It has been 2 weeks since show closed, I wanna thank Sing'theatre and TJ for roping me onboard this project. I find myself missing the songs, the adrenaline rush seeing my dressers doing the quick changes backstage. From start to end, it felt like FAMILY.

Thinking back, the show really had me put my thinking caps on. Planning costumes changes for 20scenes acted by ONLY 4 actors. How to make each stereotype character look different but yet fast for the actor to change? WAPIANG!!!

Thank you Bakchormeeboy for the special mention. Getting recognition for the work that my team and I have done is another level of satisfaction and gratification for me.

This week just got interesting for my students at Lasalle (Technical Production Management)

Inspired by Ghafir at An Inspector Calls by Wildrice Ltd, I played Costume Alterations Tikam Tikam....😈😈😈

All students were supposed to bring along to class a piece of something and they have to draw lots to see whose alterations they had to assist in doing (I simply love to see the sheer panic on their faces).

See how stress all of them are? Super loving it!

One of the greatest joys of my career is... Teaching.
I teach Foundation to Costuming in the Technical Production Program in LaSalle for years and I always love teaching them handstitching. The confusion on their faces, the stress figuring out what I just taught and the accomplishment looks that is plastered on all their faces after a challenge is accepted, done and dusted. Today's task was to hand stitch a Owl pin cushion 🦉🦉🦉

I recently did this Garlic and Chilli costume for Patch and Punnet. The guys are definitely rocking the look!

Hmmm.... Maybe I shld do a buah keras, lemongrass and galangal.

After surviving 2 years of covid, it is time to do a small renovation to the space.
