Designing for past, present and future.
As custodians of Baan Trok, we were tasked with the responsibility of making key decisions regarding the renovation and restoration of our ancestral home.
This meant treading a fine line between improving functionality (for present day and future), or preserving of ‘key elements’ that embodied the soul and story of Baan Trok Tua Ngork.
Creating a sense of harmony between the old and new was our goal, and yet the building seemed to fight back when we pushed too hard (it still does to this day). We quickly realised that as with many things, the coexistence of old & new brings tension, and perhaps this is what works to hold the two together in the same time and space.
What began as an approach to preserve original features sensitively, actually turned into an awakening of an entirely new spirit for Baan Trok, that transcends both time and space.
Instead of concealing, we chose to highlight the tension that naturally revealed itself when placing heritage and functional elements together, choosing to stick to our core values and creative ethos to guide us through challenging decisions.
These decisions can be seen everywhere throughout Baan Trok, from the walls to the floors, and ultimately creates a special feeling when visiting Baan Trok.
