Oki, a visionary artist, has breathed new life into the ancient Sakhalin Ainu stringed instrument, the tonkori. By reviving its playing methods and craftsmanship, he has transformed this once-lost instrument into a powerful medium for modern expression. Oki’s most remarkable achievement lies in merging the tonkori with dub, a genre deeply rooted in reggae. Inspired by the reggae motto “Back to Roots,” Oki’s journey led him back to his Ainu heritage, where he began to redefine the possibilities of the tonkori.
The Oki Dub Ainu Band has captivated audiences at festivals across the globe, bringing a unique fusion of traditional Ainu sounds and dub rhythms to the world stage. As a producer, Oki has collaborated with renowned Ainu singers like Umeko Ando and Marewrew, further expanding the reach and influence of Ainu music.
For Studio Lam, Oki has prepared a special set in collaboration with Naoyuki Uchida, one of Japan’s foremost dub engineers. Uchida, revered for his impeccable sense of groove, is a master at crafting tracks with intense, singular energy. Together, they will deliver a wild, immersive DUB MIX, where Oki’s tonkori and Uchida’s signature dub magic collide. This performance promises to be a groundbreaking exploration of sound, where traditional roots and cutting-edge innovation converge in an electrifying experience.
