● Rabbit and rodent soft tissue surgery - Zoltan Szabo
The practical lab is designed for veterinarians seeking to enhance their proficiency in soft tissue surgery in rabbits and rodents. Participants will gain hands-on experience with essential surgical techniques tailored to the unique anatomical and physiological characteristics of these small mammals. The wet lab will cover preoperative care, anesthesia protocols, and common procedures such as flank ovariohysterectomy, nephrectomy, cystotomy, liver lobectomy, gastrotomy, enterotomy, enterectomy, and thoracotomy. Emphasis will be placed on minimizing surgical stress and improving patient outcomes. This course is ideal for practitioners aiming to expand their skills and confidence in exotic pet surgery.
● Intubation in exotic mammals - Dan Johnson
Endotracheal intubation provides airway control and improves patient safety. However, small exotic mammals – especially rabbits and rodents – can seem nearly impossible to intubate. Lab participants will learn how to overcome the obstacles to intubation in these species. Didactic lecture will be followed by on-screen demonstration of rabbit/rodent glottal anatomy and various blind and visual intubation techniques including blind intubation with and without a tracheal guide (catheter or wire), direct visual intubation using laryngoscope or otoscope, side-by-side intubation with the aid of an endoscope, and over-the-endoscope intubation. Participants will then practice these on rabbit cadavers and a variety of other small exotic mammal cadavers.
● Rabbit dentistry - Marty Chu
The Rabbit Dentistry Workshop provides an in-depth overview of common dental issues in rabbits, including malocclusion, overgrown incisors, and molar spurs. Participants will learn diagnostic techniques, treatment options, and the dental procedures of rabbits.
