2024.04.03 will go down in the history of Taiwan. After 25 years, strong earthquake off the coast near Hualien. I am safe. intensity 7.2 at 7:58am. Intensity 5 in northern Taiwan. Tsunami alert was issued for coastal areas, but later lifted. Please remain alert. Damage and casualties most severe in Hualien. Taipei is okay.
Thanks for the concern everyone. Our family is safe.
Already over 35 aftershocks, more expected over next few days. In a way this is a good thing because it means so much energy was already built up and had to be released. Luckily only part of the energy was released in the first bigger earthquake and the rest is gradually being released through the aftershocks. Situation could have been much worse if all that energy went into the first earthquake
Regarding aftershocks, please note:
1. Be careful about loose ceilings, building tiles, air conditioners, signboards, etc. outdoors.
2. If going out, pay attention to the time changes of high-speed rail, Taiwan Railway, and MRT. Continue to watch out for landslides.

It was such a pleasure to meet the first DG of , Ambassador Vinod C. Khanna, and Mrs. G. Khanna, again after over 2 decades. Amb. Khanna was instrumental in building the foundation for official interaction, and I was honored to be part of his team when the office was established in 1995. Prabha and I had a great time reminiscing the old days and updating Amb and Ma'am about latest developments in . Grateful to both for their blessings and best wishes. Those 3 years at ITA were significant in starting me on the my interpreting career. Of course, the seeds of my work promoting Indian culture were also planted during that time. For this I am eternally thankful.

International communication is so important today. Anyone looking to enhance their skills should consider this excellent course by the amazing Grace Huang!

十多年前，我在師大念翻譯研究所的時候，拿到學校的獎學金，到荷蘭的萊頓大學交換學生一年，體驗歐洲的生活。師大與萊頓大學合作的交換學生計畫條件非常的優渥，交換生除了繳師大的學費，就可以到歐洲唸書一年之外，還能夠拿到每個月 550 歐元的津貼。這個計畫需要甄選，競爭也相當激烈。我很努力爭取，也非常幸運地拿到了交換學生的獎學金，順利地到荷蘭生活一年。

當時印象最深刻的就是跟其他的國際學生交朋友 hang out。除了那個時候每個禮拜三酒吧有 happy hour，大家都會去玩之外，也會一起相約到其他歐洲國家旅遊，在歐洲當背包客。

常常一起玩的加拿大朋友，當時在聊天的時候，談到在歐洲生活的經驗，他說到 ”I continue to be amazed every moment I’m here. Every breath I take, I’m still taking it all in.”

📌take something all in… 有種很用心的吸收、品味某件事情的意味，大家可以想像大口呼吸，感覺在吸取日月精華一樣。這種表達方式我以前就曾經聽過，覺得非常傳神，但並不是屬於我可以主動產出的表達方式，於是我默默的把這段話給記下來，想說有朝一日應該可以派上用場。這其實也是翻譯研究所帶給我的好習慣。因為口譯需要大量的口語產出，而學了口譯之後，深刻體會到沒有好的吸收，很難有好的傾吐。因此我念研究所的時期，就非常主動積極的收集各種不同的英語表達方式，筆記下來，分門別類，建立起自己的「談話素材庫」。

在荷蘭的那一年，師大的國際長剛好到萊頓大學進行交流，宴請當時師大在萊頓大學的交換學生和萊頓大學的高層一起餐敍。席間，我在沒有事先被告知的情況下，當場受邀代表所有交換學生敬酒。

國際溝通中，敬酒當然不可能只是敬酒乾杯而已，勢必是要發表一段「即席演講」，講一小段話。現場根本沒有時間讓我好好準備，因此只好赤手空拳上，必須拿出真本事，把平常就有收集的「談話素材」拿出來用。我除了先自我介紹，表達感謝之外，也把握機會「感性表達」，告訴對方我們很珍惜這樣子的機會。我記得那個時候，大概是這樣說的：

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, my name is Grace Huang, I am from the NTNU Graduate Institute of Translation and Interpretation. On behalf of all the exchange students from NTNU, I’d like to thank both Leiden University and NTNU for the wonderful opportunity for us to be here this year. Words cannot express how much we cherish the experience to interact with Dutch students, learn about a different culture, and to travel all over Europe. I have to tell you that every moment I am here, every breath that I take, I continue to be amazed and am still taking this all in. Thank you again for giving us this opportunity. We hope that in the future, more NTNU students can also be as lucky as we are and have the privilege to enjoy this wonderful experience.　

I’d like to make a toast to both Leiden University and NTNU, and drink to long-lasting friendship between the two schools and our students. Cheers!

（中譯：各位晚安，我是師大翻譯所的Grace Huang。我要代表所有師大的交換生感謝萊頓大學跟師大，讓我們今年有這麼好的機會來到這裡。言語很難形容我們有多麼珍惜跟荷蘭學生互動、了解不同文化跟在歐洲旅行的經驗。在這裡的每一刻，都還是覺得很驚嘆，而且想想好好的感受與體會一切。再次謝謝給予我們這樣的機會，也希望未來有更多的師大學生能跟我們一樣幸運，有幸享受到這樣美好的體驗。

最後讓我們一起舉杯，敬兩校的合作以及學生間長久的情誼。）

說完以上這段話，可以感受到現場的氣氛溫暖了起來，大家聽了都很開心，賓主盡歡，也有許多人在會後告訴我說講得真好。甚至國際處處長在回台灣之後，還把這一段敬酒小插曲寫在他的個人部落格以及出國報告中。

其實當時我用的方法主要是以下幾個：

✏低情境溝通：英語文化屬於低情境的溝通風格，因此需要把顯而易見的事情說出來，而且更重視儀式感。因此敬酒不能只是敬酒，一定要搭配一段簡要的談話。

✏感性表達：此時如果能再上一些感性的表達（像是Every moment I am here, every breath that I take, I continue to be amazed and am still taking it all in.)，又更能增添溫度了。

✏累積談話素材：平常就要收集所謂的「談話素材」，把能夠「被動理解」的表達方法，收集起來成為「主動產出」的談話材料，而且必須要刻意練習，才能成為可以自動產出，脫口而出的談話素材。

📌這麼多年下來，回頭再看當時的作法，發現原來我那麼早就就開始對文化差異以及國際溝通感興趣了。到現在從事國際會議口譯還有雙語主持的工作邁入第14個年頭，也累積了更多的觀察跟洞見。今年上半年，我把工作中觀察到中文以及英語表達的文化差異整理出來，歸納出「台灣人在英語溝通時最常忽略的三大面向」，然後整理出「國際溝通六大因應原則」，一個一個說明在每一個原則之下可以怎麼做。然後第二章中再把這些原則，套入課程問卷調查裡大家最感興趣的十一個商務情境：接待外賓、email follow-up、餐敘、敬酒、送禮、small talk、touch base、會議前的寒喧、談判協商（議價）、爭取資源、線上會議，教大家可以如何實際運用前面談到的溝通原則，並且搭配我獨門的談話架構，讓大家看到這樣的情境之下到底可以說什麼、怎麼說，並且直接舉例。這應該是這門課程跟一般商務英語課最不一樣的地方。

有在關注這個專頁的朋友可能都會發現，今年上半年我的口譯工作還有主持工作做得特別少，就是因為想要用心投入這門課程，好好的把多年來的觀察有系統的整理出來。
