Who said you can’t grow eucalyptus in VA! Usually grown under hoop house plastic; this year is our plastic replacement year and so plants were exposed to all the rain in August and September and grew to enormous heights. Not frost sensitive so it’s all coming in tonight. This is the second wheelbarrow full.

See you at the market!

Sunflowers 🌻
We seed them every 10 days or so starting in March. We just seeded the last succession that will be transplanted to (heated) greenhouse in two weeks. Should bloom end of October/early November with luck.

The seedlings will be planted this/next week into the hoop house.

The last field succession went out last Friday; Thanks Allison!

The last seeding in its mouse/bird protected sprout house.

The tall ones, way over my 5’ head are mammoths. Their heads will be dried for bird feeder wreaths if I can beat the birds and keep the mice at bay.

We had a wonderful evening last night strolling about the farm picking fresh flowers and herbs, then building beautiful bouquets in the workshop. Unfortunately the jazz band couldn’t set up because of potential “weather”. Hoping for a “drier” Thursday evening. We still have a few spaces available. See our website for details.

Looking for something fun to do this week? Blue Door Garden is offering two make and take workshops this week on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00-7:30. Each participant will be given a bucket and a pair of nippers. We’ll wander the flower fields picking this and that, then gather in the workshop with more flowers and foliage to build bouquets. Visit our website bluedoorgarden.net for more details and to register. Rain or shine. If it’s Shining, Wolf Hills Jazz Quartet will provide a musical backdrop to the event.

We welcome Lisianthus, the Texas Prairie Rose back into production. This is the flower that will break your heart more than once. The seed is somewhat expensive, and it takes weeks for seeds to germinate. They grow very slowly. They aren’t crazy about getting wet, so growing in a Hoop house is best. Their roots are small and weeding can easily dislodge them. They like to drink a lot when they’re babies, but once the summer hits they like a drier soil. The rose-like blooms are incredible. No thorns! No fragrance either... But they last for weeks in a vase. So enjoy this first flush while it’s here. Should bloom for a couple weeks. Second flush starts again in September- freeze.

This weekend, phase 2 of workshop renovations took place. Nick Koesters and Tom teamed up yet again to tackle the objective of adding a door to the cooler. Now, I can enter the cooler during floral construction without taking 1 step down, 2 steps up, 2 steps down and 1 step up. Those 6 steps used to add up quickly during event work. My knees, and feet are so happy! Much gratitude to the building team!
