Free to Be | Juneteenth

America was founded upon the promise of freedom. It took a minute for those cherished promises to be extended to all of its citizens. Today is dedicated to celebrating the emancipation of slavery in this country, and I’ve chosen to read and learn more about the history that inspired this holiday. The prequel to that history is messy and horrifying. Each subsequent chapter is filled with stories of hope and courage that resound today.

I’ll also be checking out Ancestry.com that recently launched a new database. During the Civil War, many court documents and records were destroyed. No so with most newspaper documents, and within those publications are stories about formerly enslaved people. Yes. People. Not property. Mothers. Not maids. Fathers. Not fugitives…all wanting to be free.

Here’s a dress I found at Goodwill for $7.00! I’ll wear to my local Juneteenth celebration. I’ll have to alter it because parts of the dress are a little too tight. I’ll break out my scissors and perhaps some duct tape (whatever works) and make it work. Just like previous generations crafted a new and hopeful existence out of a terrible past, so I, a child they’d never know, could create a lovely life.

Thank y'all so much!

I really appreciate all of the birthday greetings showered on me yesterday! Y'all are so sweet! It was a great day. It always is when you're home alone and can dance in the kitchen singing "Don't Stop Believin'" out loud. Couldn't hit that high note, though. Y'all know the one. I was afraid if I tried, I'd pass out! Nowadays "Hold on to that feeling," is more like "Hold on to that granite countertop just in case."

I love prom season...the dresses, the suits, the excitement of this annual rite of passage for young people. I had a great time with these Lovett School juniors before they headed to the prom downtown at some fancy-schmancy place. Thanks, kids, for letting me join in!

Susana | Class of 2024

In just 60 days, this young lady will wrap up her high school career. Then she'll pack her bags to head to Alabama to study psychology and other smart people stuff.

I love that she was very specific in what she wanted for her senior portraits–fields, florals and foliage and four outfits. Mom brought fun University of Alabama props, too, making the session even more fun. Wishing you the best, beautiful lady! Roll Tide!

How 'bout there?

Out location scouting all weekend, and when Kayla and I stopped for gas, I spotted the perfect light and those fabulous pink blooming trees. Are those dogwoods? Anyway, I asked her to let me take her photo—yes, in the parking lot at Costco. You can find really good photo-worthy locations if you keep your eyes peeled. You only need a tiny space to create something lovely.

All up in my business

For a change, Kayla dropped me off at the airport yesterday instead of the other way around. I'm off to Imaging USA, the big, giant conference for members of Professional Photographers of America. I absolutely love this conference...I've learned so much here in the almost 10 years I've been at this. I always cry when it's time to go home (like a five year old who doesn't want to leave the playground). Y'all, it gets bad. I break out the 2-ply Kleenex each and every time. And you can tell which conference attendees are from the south because inevitably, one of them displays such genuine concern and asks me, "Honey, are you all right?"

"Yes, Ma'am. I'm okay..." I reply, sobbing and switching to the underside of my tissue. I lie. I'm not ever okay when I have to leave. I always have so much dang fun! And there's nothing like seeing a bunch of inebriated photographers cutting a rug on the dance floor at the closing party. Some of those moves, I gotta say, would make anyone's eyes water.

Blair-Severino Family

I don’t want to brag, but honestly, I might just be the first photographer in recent history to get a genuine smile out of dad here. Just sayin’.

It's clear that this family had fun during their session with me. And of course, Sophia is nothing but fun and personality. She had me cracking up. Bill and Nick were all cool and calm and above it all, but they had a blast, too. Alexandra, thanks so much for inviting me to capture these images of your fun family. Oh, and it was nice chatting with you afterwards about al this Young-Adult-Kinda-Empty-Nester stuff. Girl, we have GOT to continue to trade notes. Merry Christmas, friend!

The Radding Family

Riley | Class of 2024
And the crowd went wild! That is exactly what happened on Senior Night after Riley’s stunning performance in the high school musical Grease. He played the lead character, Danny Zuko, and was honored by adoring fans and his theatre peeps as he celebrated his senior year and many years involved with the school’s theater program.

A skilled stage performer and serious bibliophile, Riley is a popular guy among his peers. But more than that, this sweet guy is everything a parent could wish for—he watches out for his little sister, says, “Yes, Ma’am” without hesitation, keeps his grades up, and loves on his friends (and there are many).

I first got to know Riley when he was a happy kindergartener, blond curls about his head that made him look angelic. You could see his bright beautiful face 1/4 mile away in the carpool lane. My own son was assigned to be Riley’s big boy Reading Buddy, which meant when I visited the school, I got free smiles from Riley if I passed him in the hall.

Rozi and I had the pleasure of creating Riley’s custom senior portraits at Roswell Mill. Our first session had to be postponed because he had suffered a hairline fracture weeks before, and it would have been difficult navigating the setting for his photo session.

But after a few weeks, it was on! And boy, did Riley bring it. It was an all-out production—mom managed the wardrobe, my portable dressing room, and the props (some of Riley’s favorite books). Rozi and I did the rest.

The results were stunning. And a few weeks later, I got to see Riley and his sister on stage doing his thing. He actually became Danny with perfect comedic timing and pinpoint choreography!
Riley, I cannot tell you enough how happy (and in disbelief) that I am you’re a senior! You are going to do some pretty show-stopping things in the future—actually, you already do. Stay awesome. Break a leg (well, wait, let me rethink that one). Best wishes as the curtain closes on your senior year, my friend. Love you to pieces!

Julia | Class of 2024

This lovely lady was so much fun to work with during her senior portrait shoot. And I enjoyed learning about her love for soccer (she began playing at age five) and flag football—yes. Flag football!

Our shoot was in the middle of Historic Roswell right in the middle of dinner hour. Lots of pedestrian traffic, but it added to the fun. Julia loved my mobile dressing room as she changed into one of three outfits. She even sent her mom to search for a latte nearby. And lighting assistant Rozi helped managed Julia's beautiful red curls, which ultimately did what they wanted to beautifully do.

Today, I delivered the prints she and her mom ordered, thereby marking my last senior portrait session for the season.
Julia, we're wishing you well as you wrap up the first semester of the last year of time at Walton High School. Enjoy. Stay awesome. You've got this.

Abby | Class of 2024

Can I just tell y’all, I love a girl who call the shots. This beautiful young lady did just that for her custom senior portraits with me. Abby told me she wanted a barn setting, a little downtown situation, and that she was creating a special prop—a flower-enhanced chair inspired by something she saw on Pinterest. Yes! Real flowers, y’all! And they were gorgeous!

Even though we had to reschedule once or twice due to rain, we got it done. We rented time at McBrayer Ranch (thanks, Lori!) and even had fun with some special four-legged friends. Lori was so kind to let us play with the baby goats and her horse…a first for me. And was that a mule or a donkey? I get those two mixed up. Anyway…

When not studying math, her favorite subject, Abby is listening to Morgan Wallen or shopping at Lulelemon. She plans to study business and communications while in college.

Abby, thanks for the privilege of allowing Rozi and me to create your senior portraits. Don’t forget I owe you a free BFF mini session, so hit me up “do people say that anymore”? Well, anyway, just reach out when you’re ready to rock that. Because you rock everything!

Meera | Class of 2024
This lovely lady knew exactly what she had in mind for her custom senior portraits—traditional setting and posing with some historic city vibe on the side. Meera wanted a white picket fence, and I found one. She wanted brick and a garden in the background, so I found one. After all, she is a girl who knows what she wants. So my answer is simply, “Yes, Ma’am.”

And she rocked it.

She carefully curated her favorite looks with a mix of preppy with lots of ruffles and bright colors. So she had so many cute outfits!
Meera enjoys playing volleyball and shopping with her friends. In fact, we invited one of her besties in on the senior portrait session fun. Thanks, Parker, for serving as wardrobe assistant and helping Rozi manage our portable dressing room!
A lover of science, particularly biology and chemistry, Meera plans to be pre-med in college. And in between study sessions, she’ll be listening to Morgan Wallen and Shawn Mendes because—well, Morgan Wallen and Shawn Mendes.

We all wish you the best as you complete your high school career, Meera. Before you know it, you’ll be walking across the stage to receive your hard-earned high school diploma, but doing so with style and in charge.

Ajai | Class of 2024

Ajai makes it look easy...all of it. From juggling tennis balls to looking all cool walking down a busy street in Historic Roswell with a lot of onlookers. He...nailed...it.

This young man studies some serious math and science, yet he still finds time to serve as a tennis instructor to youngsters. He wants to study medicine after high school, but he says he's not sure what discipline in that field he'll pursue. Whatever it will be, he will be awesome. This we all already know.

Best wishes to you for the remainder of your senior year, Ajai! Now, go do more smart, handsome young man tennis player stuff.

Call in the Replacements | Behind-the-Scenes

Here’s something that’s never happened at one of my Senior Portrait sessions! My client Ajai’s mom found a baby at the park after his photo session! Granted, she met the parents who were struggling to manage the baby, a toddler, a picnic basket, a cooler and all the things they brought to enjoy a day at the park. So Ajai’s mom, a physician, pitched in to assist them.

As cute as this little guy is, no wonder she became attached! I suspect that as her youngest will leave the nest soon as a member of The Class of 2024, some precious memories of him being in her arms are emerging.

Ajai had to convince his mom to return the happy bundle. She complied; I guess because bringing home random babies after a senior photo shoot is frowned upon on social media.

Meera | Class of 2024 | Sneak Peek

We just wrapped up editing Meera's custom Senior Portraits and created her proofing gallery. Thought I'd share a sneak peek here. Meera is such a sweetheart. She, her mom, my creative partner Rozi, and I braved super hot weather, nabbed two lucky parking spots, managed several outfit changes, and navigated three or four micro shoot locations to get Meera's custom senior portraits done. I had the pleasure of photographing Issie for her senior portraits, and I gotta say, she is delightful! She is her family's "No-Drama Mama," with her easy-going spirit. Miss Lady knew exactly what she wanted for her senior portraits, so Ponce City Market fit the bill. And so it begins...

My Senior Portrait Experience for the Class of 2024 started yesterday! Yaaah! We chose Ponce City Market for Issie's custom session—90-degree heat, avoiding people in the background, crying toddlers in the background, cars in the foreground, and people looking for a parking space. We took cover under the shaded stairwell. And we nailed it!

Beating the Heat

I’m culling through Issie’s senior portrait images from yesterday and wisely avoiding the 90-degree temperatures outside.
Viewing her images and trying to scale the gallery to a manageable 70 images is gonna be hard, y’all. I can’t lie. All of hers are amazing because she’s such a cute girl! Easy to capture the happiness that radiates from her. Where to begin?

Getting Down Again

Well, my Senior Portrait season has begun. First up was Issie, a delightful senior from Walton Hi.S.

Her mom took some behind the scenes shots of us at Ponce City Market. PNC doesn't allow me to use any flashes, strobes or even handheld reflectors! So I had the bright idea to bring some white poster board and wherein I wrote: "Congratulations, Issie! Class of 2024". I used that in stead of a reflector whenever I needed to. After all, they can't fault me celebrating this sweet girl.

Now, her images go off to editing & retouching and her prints and E-Portraits will be delivered soon.
