Sorry for the lack of recent posts, but we're preparing for this Saturday's Q***r Arts Festival in Plainfield, VT, and we're excited to be there!

Our next show IS happening, despite this summer's flood! This is such a sweet show, in such a sweet place, and I am so glad.

Update: We still intend to hold this year's Q***r Arts Fest in Plainfield!

The town of Plainfield suffered serious flood damage on July 10 and 11, including the destruction of several homes and many roads and bridges both in the village and in other parts of the town. We continue to grieve for everyone who has lost homes and lives.

However, the Rec Field did not flood at all, and we believe we will still be able to hold Q***rAF! there!

While we know this will bring some new challenges, it feels important to us to keep the festival in Plainfield if at all possible. Our hope is that this will let the community come together in both grief and joy. We are committed to making space at the festival for collective healing and creating opportunities to help support the town as part of the festival.

We look forward to seeing you there on August 17th!

We attended a truly lovely little Q***r Arts Festival last year in Plainfield, VT, where we were treated so well by this town! We spent the whole day looking at the building that washed away in the recent floods; it looked so comfy, and so homey, that I hardly wanted to leave. I am truly saddened that it is gone; that the town around it suffered so.

It is looking increasingly like this set of masks will not be finished in time for next weekend's show, but you know what? That's ok. I have plenty of masks to bring, and I don't need to push myself to burnout.

Progress is slow in the summer doldrums, but I should have all these masks done for this: our next show. It'll be our first time at this particular event, and I'm not really convinced that I want to add an outdoor event in July to our yearly calendar, so: we'll see how it goes this year, and make ongoing decisions after we have more data!

We're (almost) all set up at the NY Faerie Festival! Come on out, tomorrow through Sunday, 11-7 each day! Weekend passes are sold out but there's still day passes available for all three days. I have been promised that tiny unicorn is returning, there will be mermaids and goblins and puck and trolls and fairytales and maybe a few nightmares, i dunno.

That sheet of copper is no longer blank! The actual physical act of drawing out a sheet of masks is not hard; what is hard is making seventeen faces and three crowns worth of decisions all at once. But. Those decisions are made and now all I gotta do is make 'em come true. #process #metalsmith

I'm home from NY Faerie Festival, but it doesn't look like I'm getting into the shop today. Even doing laundry seems a stretch. And apologies for not updating more from the show! There's never any phone connection, and this year there wasn't wifi either, so... I listened to owls and hung out with satyrs and figured I'd catch up when i left. So, anyway; here's our metalsmith and one of our models, having some tea and a slow morning.

Sanding, sanding, sanding

After drawing them comes what is arguably the hardest step; getting the sheet split into manageable pieces. Beverly, the shear, helps out with that, but she has her boundaries and it's my job to respect those and still get all the cuts I need so that i can finish everyone up with my little jeweler's hand saw.

I tried a different angle last night, which makes it look like my fingers are way too close to the blade, when they were, in fact, a quite safe distance. Movies are hard, y'all.

Trying to bring y'all more video, but I have none of the required skills.

I always struggle a bit with Trans Day of Visibility. I was taught to hide, as a child. As a teen, I was taught that what I wanted to show the world was scary. That I was a monster. And like many, many trans people, I learned to love monsters. The monster under your bed can be your best friend. The monster in the woods might "get" you. You learn to find community where it's offered. You learn where and when it's safe to show each of your faces. You learn to have many faces. And if you're lucky,you learn what your real face looks like. And maybe, just maybe, you get a chance, after a while, to show it to everyone you love. Good luck, everybody. I love you.

And, finally: the three angel torques, in situ! The fancy neckpieces like this are more of a commitment, I will not lie to you about that. One has to pick an appropriate neckline, and, frankly, this time of year you've gotta accept that you're putting it on when you arrive at your destination; you're not gonna want to try and put a parka on over any of these three, and scarves are totally out. But. Once you're inside and warmed up, they are just as comfy as the rest of my work, and engineered to stay out of the way of most normal motions. You -can- touch these with your face whilst wearing them, but only just, and, as always, they're meticulously sanded and finished, so even if you catch an edge, it's no different than missing you mouth with a soup spoon.
