FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Executive Chef Position Filled
Second Baptist Church Members and Community:
On last evening, we hosted a Chef’s Challenge in which the candidates for Executive Chef prepared Starter and Main Course dishes to be judged by our panel of 7. The candidates for Chef were: Chef William James, Chef Courtney Hawkins and Chef Alphonso McConnell. Our panel of judges were: Councilwoman Lessie Price (City of Aiken), Mrs. Candice Nabriat (DHEC Inspector), Ms. Deborah Hart (Second Baptist Business Manager), Mr. Larry Garrick (US Foods District Manager), Mr. Clarance Jackson (Business Owner/Catering Chef), Chef Miles Williams (Executive Chef at Houndslake CC) and Chef Reginald Huggins (Executive Chef at Woodside CC).
The candidates did an amazing job preparing dishes that were both comparable to the atmosphere we are looking to create at Second on York. While the judges were handling the tasting, presentation and combo compatibility, our Director of Community & Special Events was observing the Chef’s kitchen mannerisms (proper food handling, hand washing, & plating techniques). The Executive Chef must be able to create amazing cuisine, all while following regulations and practicing food safety.
After the last dish was served, a round table was held with the panel to discuss the performance of the candidates. It was a difficult decision, as each candidate gave it their all. The judges had the ability to review each candidates resume/letters of interest, hear from the Director of each Chef’s behavior while in the Kitchen, and consider the meals before them. The decision then became unanimous that Chef Courtney Hawkins was the best choice for Executive Chef.
Chef Courtney Hawkins is an Augusta native and received a diploma in Culinary Arts from Augusta Technical College (4.0 GPA). She is SERV Safe Certified and brings a set of talents that will be valuable to Second on York. She possesses knowledge of cooking procedures and is certified with nutrition and sanitation regulations and safety standards. Chef Courtney is very loyal and dedicated, being with her former employer (DoubleTree-Augusta) since 2007. Her strong leadership skills, solid judgement and decision-making abilities afforded her the advancement from Cook to Sous Chef, to her final position as Executive Chef with her former employer. She has stated her commitment to the vision and is willing to grow alongside us at Second. We’re looking forward to the great things that Chef will bring to Second on York and Second Baptist Church.
