On August 1st, Curtis and I shared a beautiful and private wedding ceremony surrounded by those closest to us. It wasn’t about marking a beginning, but about affirming the choice we have made for nearly a decade to walk through this life together.
Part of that choice, beyond our love for one another, was the reality that this right could one day be taken away. Just over a week later, the Supreme Court has been asked to overturn Obergefell v. Hodges, the very case that made marriage equality the law of the land.
Much of our lives, our work, and even our love has been labeled “political” simply because we exist openly and authentically. And this is with the immense privilege we hold as white, cisgender men in America. Love shouldn’t have to be political, but right now, it is.
Yes, buy plants. Order flowers. Support small and local businesses. But more importantly, support your friends, your family, and your loved ones in the LGBTQ+ community. We need each other now more than ever.
I didn’t love Curtis more the day we signed our marriage license than I did the day before, but the right to share the same protections and privileges as any heterosexual couple should never be up for debate. I’m grateful we made this choice on our own terms, in our own time. And I want that same right in perpetuity for all who come after us.
Lots of love, and in solidarity.
