Such an honor to meet these extraordinary young women at our annual Capital District Sports Women of the Year, Inc. Awards Gala. Our fifth year, and our biggest crowd ever. We appreciated Senator Jim Tedisco coming to provide proclamations and remarks. Words of advice and wonderful memories were provided by retired Iowa women's basketball coach Lisa Bluder, who developed Caitlin Clark. It's the most majestic, beautiful and historic trophy in sports. In 2003, Brian Gionta shared The Cup at events in Rochester, New York after the Devils won it. He said I could touch it, but I knew "you can't touch it if you don't win it." He laughed and I said I wasn't going to win it. Ah, I did hug it. Congrats to all the players, coaches, staff and fans of the Florida Panthers, who won The Cup for the first time in franchise history.

Bill Walton was a giant. Literally and figuratively. In sports we wonder what people are really like. How they are perceived. In Los Angeles before a Warriors and Clippers game I was outside our locker room and Bill Walton stopped by. He introduced himself and asked about me and how I liked the league and my background and was genuinely thoughtful and respectful. He didn’t need to do that. But he did. He even gave me tips about how to work with players and the media at that level. I thanked him for his time and he said it was a pleasure. No sir. The pleasure was mine. No cell photo needed. A memory of a hall of fame giant as a player, a broadcaster and a person. God bless you.
