DJ Harris

DJ Harris mynewdj is a mobile DJ service provided by Hands On Music, LLC. Hello. My name is Aaron, but I go by DJ Harris. Then we booked our next event for $300.
(2)

I provide DJ service for weddings, school events/dances, private parties, corporate events, promotional events, and more. I have been a professional DJ since 2016, but I have been producing and recording music since 2005. I recently decided to become a professional DJ after my wife and I decided to go the DIY route for music on our wedding day. I purchased all the equipment and put together the pl

aylist and timeline. I am glad we chose to do it ourselves because I enjoy this kind of stuff, but it made me realize how many other people really need an economical choice for a DJ.

2 years after our wedding, my wife and I started our company and booked our very first event for $100. In our first year, we had a goal of just doing 10 events to get our feet wet, but we booked over 20 events and one of them was a non-profit event in Portland. Now, we have settled into a comfortable price range that is economical, reasonable, and highly competitive with other event companies in Oregon. My new goal is to book a minimum of 20 events per year, and make sure that at least one of those events is a non-paid event. We will do very little advertising (to keep our overhead costs low, and our prices economical), and I do as much as I can in-house (i.e. website creation and maintenance, business admin, etc.). Also, we keep this as a part-time business because I do have a full-time job in additional, to this business. In the future, we will expand from mobile DJ service to operating a wedding and event venue space. I do what I do because it is so much fun to play a song and watch how people react to it. Even people who don't dance enjoy hearing their favorite song played. I also love it when my clients come up to me after an event and say, "Wow! You are really good at what you do!" I know that they are saying this because my prices are reasonable and they probably were not expecting my equipment or skills to be as good as it turned out. Even more, I like it when students at a school dance end the night by stopping by my DJ table and saying thank you. This is great because students have no idea how much it costs to hire a DJ and they probably do not care. They have no incentive for paying me a compliment, but they do it because I am a genuine guy and I do my best to make sure that my Clients and Guests are enjoying my service. If you believe in the type of service that my company provides, I hope that you will tell your friends to consider us for their next event. Send us a message and let's chat more about your event. I'd love to help in any way I can.

Many couples will choose their wedding venue because of the natural backdrop beauty. They are hoping to get amazing pictures and give their Guest an amazing view to gaze upon as the nuptials proceed. Unfortunately, many venues don't plan ahead by thinking about how the DJ or sound engineer will place the speakers to provide the sound for the ceremony. In my first few years of DJ'ing, this was the most frustrating part of the whole wedding event. It's a matter of locating the electrical outlets, keeping the power cords out of the way, placing speakers up front without blocking the bridal party, and getting sound from my sound board to the speakers (more wires).

Well, I have invested my efforts into finding a reasonable solution for ceremony sound coverage and it comes down to two simple things: smaller speakers and wireless audio. The speakers are small, but they still push out some quality sound at good volumes in an outdoor space. When it comes to wireless sound there are a couple of options: bluetooth, digital, and analog. Bluethooth connections are good for consumer applications, like at home. In a professional setting, bluetooth is prone to dropouts and it is rather unsecure because just about anyone with a smart device may be able to tap into the signal and push their own audio (yikes!). Digital wireless seems like it would be good solution, but the 2.4ghz frequency is crowded by so many other devices. Live audio requires a consistent and strong signal otherwise it will get choppy and the experience will be terrible. Analog wireless is the best solution as long as the frequency in use is clear. This should not be an issue at most venue locations, but occasionally the analog space is too crowded and would result in a poor audio experience. Wired is always the best solution, but venues typically do not pre-install wired connections so it's a matter of depending on professional experience to make a decision that preserves the natural beauty of the ceremony space while ensuring that the sound experience is high quality.

Hopefully this post is an example of what I mean when I use the word "professional." A professional can navigate tough situations like this without adding extra stress to your day.

2023 will be my 8th year as a DJ. Each year I learn something new about myself and how to provide the best possible experience for my clients. From 2020 through 2022 I learned the value of focusing on connecting with the right people.

My goal for 2023 is to support 30 groups/couples for their special event. I want to work with people who are fun, easy-going, loving, caring, and excited about hiring an awesome DJ for their event. Additionally, I want to DJ for Guests who enjoy celebrating and will appreciate the unique experience of partying with a professional DJ versus a playlist.

The odd thing about setting goals and talking about them publicly is that it expresses vulnerability. As I am posting this I am thinking, "What if I don't reach 30 events and people assume that it is because I'm not good at what I do?"

Well, I don't have time to be too worried about this small goal of reaching 30 DJ events because my bigger goal is to invest in some commercial real estate so that I can open and operate a Venue space in Albany, Oregon. And I have completed quite a bit of research and number crunching to figure out how to make that come to life.

Wedding DJs can cover your wedding day from Guest arrival until the last song at the reception.

HOWEVER

It is also possible that you hire a band and a DJ to create a dynamic atmosphere for your Guests.

You need to think about your budget and the type of experience/memories that you want to create.

Every option has pros and cons and the only person who can tell you which option is best is YOU.

But I am excited that today I get to share the space with two other talented groups. It is. It common that I get hired into situations like this.

Can you see the speakers? That's because I always choose a low profile setup so that most Guests (and the photographer) cannot see the speakers, but they can hear the sound coming from them.

This includes power cords and audio cables.

This venue is beautiful and I don't want the equipment to take anything away from the ceremony views.

This is something small that can help show the difference between an amateur DJ and a professional DJ. An amateur is concerned with getting sound to the audience. A professional is thinking about the whole experience. Cord management. Speaker positions. Quality of wireless signals and overall sound. Dead and hot spots that may be annoying for Guests.

As a Guest or client you only see speakers placed on a stand or on the ground with microphones, but with a professional DJ there is a lot more happening behind the scenes.

Here's to all the future Oregon couples who will be hiring a DJ for their wedding. May you find a professional person/team who cares about the whole experience from start to finish.

Shot out to for being an amazing host venue.

Based on my current 2022 schedule I have met my goal for the year (revenue, number of events, and venue diversity). I'll be visiting over 20 different venues throughout the year and a significant number of those venues will be first time visits. I am still taking 2022 bookings for some open dates. Check my website for availability. Send me a message or schedule a consult.

Just because someone in your circle is winning doesn't mean that you are losing. We can all be winning in our own way. Watching winners makes me feel like I can win and I hope it does the same for you.

Right now I am winning and people who are on the outside looking in probably don't understand how deep that is. I am winning because of all the things that I have going on for me in my future.

I be scrolling IG and I see my peers doing big things and it just gets me pumped. I want the best for y'all and me.

I saw a video of my pal and I was like dang that boy is good. It made me feel proud to know him because he shared an experience of DJ'ing a wedding that looked really cool.

I saw some pics of and I thought how awesome it must feel to have such a beautiful venue space to rent out for others.

I hope that I can continue to expand my network with some cool people who are winning. And keep posting your pics and videos.

It's late so imma put the ph9ne down and finish up my chores.

Love ya!

Father and Daughter Dance

Let me be clear. All I did was press play and introduce the dance.

However, my sound system is high quality and placed in the room in a way that it provides the best sound for the room. When I spoke on the microphone I used a clear and professional speaking voice that helped everyone to transition their attention to the dance floor. And after the father daughter dance was over I had a "banger " ready to play next and capitalize on the energy that was already created from this unique Father Daughter Dance experience.

Send me a message. I have about 30 open slots for 2023 wedding season. I still have a few random dates available in 2022.

PARTY FAVORITE: YEAH

First off, I was not expecting to be such an amazing venue. This was my first time DJ'ng a wedding at Camp Colton and I was amazed at the Chapel, The Reception Hall, and the crew.

Second, It is amazing how the song Yeah by Usher is still packing dance floors. The intro always hits hard and the kick/bass from the beat is so classic to that period of time.

At one point during the reception I looked over to the tables and thought, "Did every one leave?" Nope, they were all crowding the dance floor.

Not too shabby for a Sunday wedding in March.

INTEGRITY

Today I did a consult with the mom of a bride and as I was discussing price. I paused and checked to see if the price I quoted was consistent with what she saw on my website a couple of weeks ago. Our prices were just updated so I had a feeling that she probably saw the old pricing schedule.

As a business mynewdj has a right to charge what we want, but we value integrity and pricing transparency. The price we display is the price you get.

On the spot I dropped the quote by about $400 to match this client's expectations. The thing is: I will not get distracted by greed. Money is a tool and I prefer to place higher focus on the services over the tools.

I define Integrity as: what a person does when that person thinks no one is looking and their behaviors will not be discovered.

If a person thinks no one is looking, they are more likely to behave as close to their normal self as possible. The moment that person thinks someone is watching, they know that whatever they do may be talked about to others.

If your really wanna get real, someone is always watching. Even if that someone is just you.

SOUL TRAIN LINE

It's a group activity that allows dancers to have individual expression without conforming to a specific pre-choreograpged line dance. Anyone can participate and the energy on the dance floor grows as each person or couple gets another go down the line.

So. Much. Fun.

Sometimes I get an opportunity to pull out my equipment and host a session for myself. Although in this video I was actually testing out some new equipment for my rig. I purchased a compressor/limiter and gate/expander DBX rack unit for my mics and this thing kicked up the sound quality, especially when I have to turn up to higher volumes.

I had been noticing some challenges with my mics during events and I had been trying all sorts of things to resolve them. Finally I decided that I needed to add in some additional processing. I have 1 other processing until that I want to add to my rig, but right now the unit is out of stock (story of the pandemic right) and I will have to wait.

Anyhow, this is an example of how I continually invest back into my business to improve service quality. Sometimes it is about buying new equipment, other times it is about redesigning a website or booking process.

By the way - that is a special Hands On DJ Remix playing in the video.

K.I.S.S.

Keep
It
Simple
Silly

In an effort to simplify pricing for our wedding clients we are updating our rates.

Each year we review our rates and services to determine if things need to be updated. This year we are more concerned with how challenging it can be for some couples to make objective decisions about which services they need to select.

Some couples get distracted by the "price tag" on individual elements of the wedding day and then they try to justify why they do or don't need the additional service items.

For this reason, we are simplifying the pricing so that our one package includes all of the standard wedding day services for Oregon weddings.

We'll be posting more info on pricing updates shortly. Send us a DM to learn more about our DJ services.

The Grand Exit
It is an opportunity for the newlyweds to transition from group celebration to an intimate getaway.

Some couples underestimate the value of ending the night in this fashion. Of course, it is not the only way to bid farewell to your Guests, but when you are planning your wedding day you should think carefully about how you want to experience the ending that leads to a new beginning.

In this video, the couple didn't provide me any details about how they were going to handle the end of the reception. I was able to be in the moment and react to what was happening.

The other portion of this video that is cut off is the part where the couple jumped in a nice sports car and rode off into the night while the song, "Never Enough" was playing the background.

Get in touch with me to learn more about professional wedding DJ service. I'd love to hear about your wedding day vision and answer your questions.

Monday Motivation

Reflecting on events of the past and thinking thinking about what went well and how I will implement those things into future events.

First Things First - That lighting rig is from my original lighting setup. I haven't used it since 2019. I am glad that I didn't sell it in 2020 or 2021 like I was planning to do.

Seconds - I need to reconsider using rechargeable batteries to run the wireless setup for my speakers. I am using 8 to 20 batteries per event. I like using fresh batteries for the wireless mics, but I have more flexibility in the wireless packs.

3rd - I need to do additional library management to make sure my tracks have the correct Metadata (i.e. year, genre, and other notes). This helps me to act swiftly while choosing songs to play. I found a bunch of 70s songs that were not labeled correctly. P.S. there are some good dance hits in that decade.

Taking this DJ thing to a whole new level with the custom mix for my wedding couple on tomorrow. They have selected two versions of the same song that use different pronouns and switch out the word boy for girl. The couple asked me to mix the two versions together so that they sound like one song.

The challenge is this artist recorded the song in slightly different tempos and with slightly modified instrumentation. So it wasn't as simple to just fade in/out. I had to do a little slicing, panning, and creative fading to make it mix together.

Hit me up if you are looking for a professional DJ! I enjoy what I do and your Guests will really enjoy partying with me.

Shout out to my wife because she's holding down the household without me.

Shout out to The Troutdale House for having a beautiful venue.
