Theatre at the NHCC: Lion Island: Cuba’s Warrior of Words

April 3 – 13, 2024
7:30 pm Fridays & Saturdays
2:00 pm Sundays
*Thursday, April 3rd at 7:30 pm is a special preview/community night

NHCC | Bank of America Theatre

The NHCC and our friends and partners at the Vortex Theatre invite you to experience a captivating original play adapted from Margarita Engle’s award-winning young adult novel in verse, Lion Island: Cuba’s Warrior of Words.

Set in 1870s Cuba, this powerful story delves into the complexities of racial, ethnic, linguistic, and national identities. Through dynamic elements of dance, puppetry, and music, the play explores the historical forces—diaspora, colonialism, immigration, and the transatlantic slave trade—that have shaped Hispanic/Latine identity.

Local playwright Patricia Crespín brings the story to life, centering the historical figure Antonio Chuffat, a young man of Chinese, African, and Cuban descent. Working as a messenger in Cuban fields and navigating a tense colonial world, Antonio discovers the power of words to advocate for the rights and dignity of laborers in his community.

Join us for this intergenerational production that invites audiences to reflect on identity, resilience, and the enduring struggle for justice and belonging.

$26 w/ $2 off for children 10 years old and younger, seniors and NHCC members.
*$5 special price for the Thursday, April 3rd preview/community performance.

This is a general admission event.

Opera Southwest: Llantos 1492

February 16, 19, 21, & 23, 2025
2:00 pm Sundays
7:30 pm Wednesday & Friday

Opera Southwest and the NHCC present Adam Del Monte’s Llantos 1492.

“Oh, times of light, how they have fallen through the narrow passage of the hourglass into an ashtray of darkness.”

The Reconquista is drawing to a close and the Inquisition’s dark cloud is gathering on the Spanish horizon. A lawyer defends a village of gitanos against false accusations. Against a musical backdrop that blends the musical traditions of flamenco and opera, the story unfolds: a rigged trial, mystical experiences, a love story, exile and ex*****on. This is an opera about resilience and the ultimate triumph of identity, both religious and ethnic, in a time of intolerance.

$29, $49, $69, $89 & $109 with discounts for anyone 30 years old and younger and Opera for All with a WIC or EBT card. NHCC box office by calling 505-724-4771 or in person.

Opera Southwest: New Year’s with the Opera!

Tuesday, December 31, 2024 at 2:30 pm

Opera Southwest presents New Year’s with the Opera! Featuring Clay Hilley & Sara Duchovnay

Close out 2024 and begin 2025 with featured performers tenor Clay Hilley and soprano Sara Duchovnay. Clay Hilley makes an exciting return to Opera Southwest after his stunning portrayal of Radamès in “Aida” back in 2015. Clay comes to us directly from the Deutsche Oper Berlin. He has earned rave reviews from the New York Times and Financial Times, and he continues to shine in some of opera’s most illustrious heroic roles. Sara Duchovnay has been hailed by The San Francisco Examiner as “clarion voiced” and OperaWire described her as “dynamic and expressive”, further adding that she “sang with warmth and luster” and “moved with elan, thus matching her vocal vibrancy”. Of her 2019 role debut as Nedda in Pagliacci with Opera Roanoke, the Roanoke Times praised her “nuanced portrait of an unhappy woman” and “her high notes [which] rang out with ease at the swelling climaxes in both her first act aria and in her love duet with Silvio.”

Accompanying our singers are the Opera Southwest Orchestra, the New Mexico Symphonic Chorus, and the Albuquerque Youth Symphony. With a variety of opera favorites and light classics, there is something for everyone to ring in the New Year.
