WDIY is proud to honor the more than 120 volunteers that make Lehigh Valley Public Radio Possible. 💚

This week, for our 40th highlight, we are recognizing Paul Willistein! Paul is the host of At the Movies, WDIY’s weekly film review feature. He also occasionally hosts special episodes of Lehigh Valley Arts Salon, including welcoming the winners of the annual Lehigh Valley Press Student Poetry Project. Paul is the editor of the Lehigh Valley Press Focus section, a position he has held since 2008. Paul has received more than 30 Keystone Media state newspaper journalism awards and an Allentown Arts Commission Arts Ovation Award.

The Arts@St Johns is delighted to host The Mainstreet Brass on Sunday, December 3rd at 3PM. It is sure to be a delightful concert to begin the Christmas season!

The ensemble is recognized for its refined playing and for commissioning new literature and arrangements. The Mainstreet Brass spirit creates a captivating on stage energy from the opening downbeat to the final chord — a memorable experience that’s enthusiastically shared with others.

We hope you plan to attend this Mainstreet Brass concert on December 3rd – we know you will discover why its music making can be an uplifting, magical escape from the routine and welcome the Christmas season!

CONCERT with Allentown Band - THIS SUNDAY, February 5, 3:00 pm. ďťżFeatured soloists will be Chet Brown, singing songs of Duke Ellington and Sammy Davis,Jr.; Evelyn Stewart, on "Five American Gospel Songs" by Luigi Zaninelli;, DeVaughn Roberts, on FlugelHorn and Trumpet with "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child," and Eric Gombert performing Black composer Florene Price's "Adoration" on the magnificent Pipe Organ. Also on the program, the band will perform Selections from George Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess and the music of W.C. Handy and Scott Joplin.

Come hear Jeffrey in our Mozart: Requiem at the Arts at St. John's series!

Jeffrey Bell, Tenor, is excited to be reprising Mozart’s Requiem after a long hiatus from performing. He studied locally at Moravian University as well as abroad, performing in numerous European cities and venues. His operatic repertoire includes Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute), L’elisir D’amore, (The Elixir of Love), Vanessa, Le Contes D'Hoffmann (Tales of Hoffmann), The Rake’s Progress, Tosca, Il Matrimonio Segreto (The Secret Marriage), Semele, L'amico Fritz and Ariodante. Other past solo performances include Mendelssohn's Elijah, Amy Beach’s Mass in E♭, and Handel’s Messiah. Outside of classical works, Jeffrey frequently fronted jazz combos and big bands and performed the role of Jesus in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar. Outside of music, Jeffrey owns a manufacturing company and directs the technological innovation team.

Come hear Alyce in our Mozart: Requiem at the Arts at St. John's series!

Alyce Daubenspeck is a classically-trained mezzo-soprano whose public performances have been described as "emotionally shattering" with a voice "fully formed from top to bottom, a pristine tone, and high notes that are both extraordinarily controlled and on the edge of wildness."

A Nazareth native, Ms. Daubenspeck enjoys performing opera, oratorio, and musical theater. She has most recently performed with Salt Marsh Opera (2022), Opera Raylynmor (2022), Opera Ithaca (2022), Chicago Summer Opera (2021), Amici Opera (2020), Opera Steamboat (2019), Opera in the Ozarks (2018), Westminster Opera Theater (2016 – 2017), and the Princeton Festival (2016). Ms. Daubenspeck’s past roles have included the Tisbe (La Cenerentola), Marcellina (Le Nozze di Figaro), the Witch (Hänsel und Gretel), Anita (La Navarraise), Armelinde (Cendrillon), Augusta (The Ballad of Baby Doe), Berta (Il barbiere di Siviglia) Madame de Croissy (Dialogues des Carmélites), Third Lady (Die Zauberflöte), Lyubov (Mazepa), La Tasse Chinoise (L’enfant et les sortilèges) and Virginia (Billy Blythe).

Ms.Daubenspeck graduated with distinction from Westminster Choir College in 2018 with a Master of Music in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy. She studies privately in the studio of the distinguished dramatic soprano Sharon Sweet, and enjoys a spot on the roster of Jim Harwood’s management in NYC.

Come hear Anthony in our Mozart: Requiem at the Arts at St. John's series!

Anthony Sharp (they/he) is an operatic bass and pianist holding a M.M. in Voice Performance from The Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University (‘22) and a B.M. in Voice Performance from Temple University (‘18). While at Peabody, Anthony was featured in Handel’s Semele and Argento’s Postcard from Morocco, and won 1st prize in the 2020 Vocal Studies Song Competition. Anthony is now Director of Music (organist/choirmaster) at Allentown’s Episcopal Church of the Mediator and Associate Director/Accompanist of Valley Voices—a community chorus based in Neffs. Anthony is passionate about coaching and teaching singers of all levels, and does so privately as well as at Lehigh Valley’s Community Music School. As a bass chorister, Anthony has enjoyed singing with Baltimore Choral Arts Society, Opera Philadelphia Chorus, Philadelphia Symphonic Choir, Westminster Chapel Choir, and Interrupted Silence.

Come hear Sarah in our Mozart: Requiem at the Arts at St. John's series!

Sarah Robbins is excited to join Interrupted Silence for another meaningful music making experience. Seen last year as a soloist in Handel’s Messiah, Sarah is a teaching and performing artist based in South Jersey. Favorite stage credits include Beggar Woman in Sweeney Todd, Fiordiligi in Cosi fan Tutte, Serpina in La serva padrona, and Fantine in Les Miserables. She graduated from Rowan University in 2021 with a degree in Vocal Music Education, and frequently performs as a soloist and chorister in the tristate area. Outside of performing, Sarah teaches elementary music and directs a church choir.
