π¨ HAINES HOUSE UPDATE π¨
The future of the Haines House remains at serious risk. On September 24, the Altoona Planning and Zoning Commission voted down the proposal to rezone the Haines House by a vote of 4-2. Despite this outcome, the final decision still rests with the Altoona City Council, which has the authority to override the Commissionβs decision and proceed with rezoning the property.
Sarah Kavalier and Kyle Clarkson of Legacy Realty of Iowa are continuing their push for rezoning. They plan to present their case to the City Council, despite growing public concern.
Why is this a problem?
If the rezoning is approved, the property would be open to commercial development. Historic elements in the home that make it eligible for official historic landmark status will likely be removed to meet commercial requirements.
The Haines House is more than just a buildingβit is a vital piece of Altoonaβs heritage. Rezoning it would open the door to drastic changes that could erase a key part of our communityβs history. Preserving the Haines House as a residential property means preserving a link to our past, and ensuring that the character and integrity of the neighborhood remains intact.
If you believe the Haines House should remain zoned residential, we urge you to sign our petition at Change.org/HainesHouse.
