We had another photo shoot last week! Perfect timing before the frost came. So happy this couple enjoyed their time at the garden ๐ธ๐

Itโs dahlia digging time! This week is the beginning of putting the garden to sleep and the first step is labeling the dahlias before the frost turns them brown. Every year this happens before I can double label them as their first tags typically run away on legs. Proud to say Mac and I got this done!

We had our annual Canning Day yesterday. I was not in charge of counting jars but we did use up everything we thawed! This year we made a new variety of spaghetti sauce, tomato soup, Bloody Mary mix, salsa, tomatillo verde, and stewed tomatoes. All of the veggies used (except two bell peppers) were grown in our gardens.
I do have half a freezer of tomatoes left so Iโm not done yet! But a 13 hour day was enough for now. What a wonderful harvest ๐ฉ๐ฝโ๐พ

We were rained out today! The You Pick is closed. We will try for another Pick next week. Thank you to everyone who came!

Bittersweet moment. The last CSA for the 2023 season went out for pick up today ๐ฉ Iโll admit, the garden is tired, Iโm tired, and itโs time for a good recharge! The frost this week did take out a majority of my zinnias; which is a staple for my late summer bouquets. Iโll take that as my sign to start to putting the beds to sleep

Featured Flower: Lisianthus
In this photo I have several varieties. These are my absolute favorite cut flowers. They look like a fluffy rose, they have fantastic vase life, and they will give you succession flowers.
Lisianthus can also handle frost; which means they are one of the first plants in the ground in May for me. They are also the first seeds I start in FEBRURAY. And they are fussy babies too.
But oh, arenโt they worth it? ๐

Featured Flower: Celosia
I have several varieties in this mix but oh my ๐ Celosia, aka C***s Comb, is a great filler flower to any arrangement. It gets quite tall so itโs perfect as the โspikeโ in a bouquet after your snapdragons get tired in August. I have found if you โpinchโ the lead part of the plant, you will get skinny side shoots perfect for arrenagment.
In this mix, there are seeds from Johnnys and Floret

Highlight of the tomato season so far. We hit our goal of growing a 2 lb tomato. The previous record was 1 lb, 14 ounce. This is a German Pink. It (obviously) has some ripening to do, but once I saw the size of it I absolutely had to pick and weigh it.
This bad boy will ripen up over the next few days and be canned by the end of the weekend.

While Mac and I took the afternoon off, we will be at the garden tomorrow 5pm to 8pm for our You Pick Event! Take an hour to enjoy the flowers before retreating back to the AC ๐๐
See you tomorrow night!

Preserving again today! Iโll be freezing halved tomatoes, blanched corn, de-seeded peppers, and making fresh pesto ๐ฑ
What has everyone else โsaved for laterโ recently?

Featured Flower: Benaryโs Giant Salmon Rose Zinnia
I should have put my hand for scale, but these zinnias really pack a punch! The blooms are easily three inches across and they are the perfect sunset color ๐ What more could you ask for?!

Featured Flower: Madame Butterfly Bronze with White Snapdragon
This snapdragon is a showstopper in the realm of cut flowers! With its fluffy bloom and long stem, itโs a dream to use in arrangements. It comes in several colors as well to meet a variety of bouquet design needs

Today was a big preserving day for Apple River Blooms! The freezer welcomed dill, peppers, tomatoes, corn, radishes, and zucchini.
I froze fresh dill for the first time after learning of this technique from someone at our You Pick last Sunday! Also tried freezing corn in the husk this year after a suggestion by my MIL. Gotta love gardeners helping gardeners ๐

Featured Flower: Zinderella Lilac Zinnia
I bought this seed packet from Floret. I had excellent germination and the seedlings were hardy enough to handle a transplant on an 80 degree day. The fluffy, double bloom gives it a cupcake appearance, which is so attractive in bouquets ๐

Featured Flower: Antique Pink Stock ๐ฉท
This lovely stem of blooms took me three years to grow, but it was worth the wait. Stock smells like cloves or a cup of chai tea to me ๐คค

I grew these by accident a couple years ago. I had them planted in the garden space and thought they died so I threw them over the fence ๐ They grew the next year just to spite me
