This was super random and it was fan service. And it is absolutely okay.
I think the worst argument I have seen to make this make sense is that the Undertaker is mad at Roman for beating him at Mania. Roman beat Taker clean and was a babyface at that time. Taker had since then acknowledged Reigns being the better man on that night. If the only reason Taker came out is to avenge that loss, then it is a pretty petty reason. And makes Taker look like a sour loser. I don't think that was the case.
The one point that did make sense was the Rock overusing his power and Taker being this shadow guardian of WWE came to set things straight. My only issue with this is the same issue a lot of fans have with a lot of AEW's bookings. I'll come back to this in a moment.
AEW's random dream matches on free TV might not mean a lot to you but it clearly means a lot to the hardcore smark demographic that is AEW's main target audience. Those matches are also fan service. I can already sense a lot of people mis-understanding this paragraph and coming to the conclusion that I am directly comparing the star power of the people involved. I am not. But the fact is whenever a Minoru Suzuki vs Bryan Danielson gets announced I see most AEW fans mark out. Which is fine. Their expectations from pro-wrestling is different than yours. Another reason why alternatives are necessary.
Now coming back to Taker being WWE's Shadow Hokage, it made sense in that case but is still a reach. And WWE really could have done a better job at teasing it. Heck a simple mention of how the Rock and Roman are above every legend including the Undertaker or something like that would have made more storyline sense. I am of course nitpicking here but this was the culmination of their biggest story on their biggest show and slight chances would make this otherwise almost perfect booking, perfect. This reminds me of how AEW (to a much greater extent) booked All In. They sold out and given AEW's track record with ppvs you know most matches are going to be solid (I am not going to argue with trolls on this post so if you comment those comments will be ignored). From an in-ring perspective we knew All In was going to be at the worst a good show. However as a lot of you say Wrestling isn't about wrestling but telling a story and AEW really could have done a way better job at telling a story to All In (outside the MJF/Adam Cole story which was fantastic).
So why am I writing so much? My point is both of these scenarios are fan-services and honestly? Whether you as a fan feel served with a good in-ring quality or whether you feel served with a good story or by a surprise return of a legend, that's totally on you. And if you felt served by this, then good for you. Honestly, it was pretty fun seeing Taker return. I think the story otherwise has been pretty perfect and fan-services are okay in wrestling. This really isn't a Nobel Prize winning science paper. Let people have fun (whichever company/form of fan service they enjoy).
