The Ohio Main Street program is administered by Heritage Ohio, and has been working with communities across the state of Ohio to revitalize their historic or traditional commercial areas. Based in historic preservation, the Main Street approach was developed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation to save historic ommercial architecture and the fabric of American community-built environmen
ts, but has become a powerful economic development tool as well. The Main Street program is designed to improve all aspects of the downtown business district, producing tangible and intangible benefits. Improving economic management, strengthening public participation, and making downtown a fun place to visit are as critical to Main Street's future as recruiting new businesses, rehabilitating buildings, and expanding parking. Building on downtown's inherent assets - rich architecture, personal service, and traditional values and most of all, a sense of place - the Main Street approach has rekindled entrepreneurship, downtown cooperation and civic concern. It has earned national recognition as a practical strategy appropriately scaled to a community's local resources and conditions. And because it is a locally driven program, all initiative stems from local issues and concerns. Looking for something to do on a second Wednesday evening? Want to visit our wonderful shops? Interested in strolling through historic downtown Amherst while being serenaded? There is an exciting array of free musical entertainment scattered throughout the historic district. Many of our local musicians provide music for your listening enjoyment in several different locations. Do some shopping, grab something to eat or enjoy some great ice cream and be a part of this fantastic event on the second Wednesday June through September.. The fun begins at 6 pm and goes until 8 pm. What a wonderful family event with a little something for everyone. There will be country, jazz, rock, island, Russian folk, Irish and pop just to highlight a few of the musical groups. Grab an ice cream cone and roam the streets or find some place to sit and listen. Bring a lawn chair if you want. Relax and enjoy the evening. Bring your bike, your spouse, your visitors and your children to enjoy a good time.
