For those of you new to me, this is my attempt to give back to those living now with ALS. Named after my husband, John Gafford, who passed away from ALS at the age of 61 on May 5, 2021, John-boy's Place is a fully accessible, dedicated vacation space where ALS patients and families can gather to make BIG memories doing the LITTLE things.
Amenities include electric hospital bed, hoyer lift, lift chair, roll-in shower with fully reclining shower chair, widened doorways and a 10 ft Bruno platform lift for access to the main floor. Space is the biggest extra amenity here - *9ft wide covered wrap around porch with views of the lake, woods, bird feeders and more, plus over 2200sf of covered concrete space under the house with TV/Audio, lots of gaming tables, a Cantina Bar and lots of movable seating. By the lake, with the help of Lori Larson Heller, we have added a pavilion over the concrete pad and will soon start on the memorial paver patio and firepit area.
As for beds, we've got a TON: 9 beds, scattered throughout 3 bedrooms, plus two twin size cots ~ easily sleeps 13, but can accommodate up to 16!
The deal: through my nonprofit, Windchime Wishes Limited, I gift one week per month to an ALS patient and family. In addition, I work with Team Gleason on their Gleason Adventures. I will make any combination of arrangements to help other pALS get in, as well as individuals living with other mobility-challenging disabilities. Some folks use the AirBNB site to simply make their own reservation, whereas others contact me to see what we can work out to ease the financial situation. I've done two-for-ones, where people pay for two nights and I give them four, I've had some pay ONLY the cleaning fee of $200, and I am willing to do almost anything to open the home and grounds up for those who have this need.
Donations are always welcome! Birthday fundraisers are a great way to help Windchime Wishes Limited continue in its mission to create memories for pALS and cALS, also! Sponsorships are available, as well, if you would like to pay for a week's stay in someone's name or donate paid caregiver time, 12 hour shifts, for a cALS to truly have some downtime while at the house.
