Tonight at the Grammys, we’re cheering on Meshell Ndegeocello, nominated for Best Alternative Jazz Album for No More Water: The Gospel of James Baldwin.

We are proud to have commissioned an earlier iteration of this work through Fisher Center LAB in 2020—Meshell Ndegeocello and Charlotte Brathwaite’s Chapter & Verse: The Gospel of James Baldwin.

Chapter & Verse is a project inspired by James Baldwin’s truth-telling treatise on justice in the United States, The Fire Next Time, and our endlessly changing world.

Audiences experienced Chapter & Verse in three ways—video testimonies of Baldwin’s texts, printed broadsheets delivered by mail, and an international toll-free phone line with songs, meditations, and chants available in seven languages. 📞 🎶

“The Search for Power,” an interactive installation and a lecture performance by Tania El Khoury and Ziad Abu-Rish, opens next Saturday, February 1 at the Hessel Museum of Art, presented by Fisher Center LAB and the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College (CCS Bard). ⚡️🔌🎧 bit.ly/search-for-power-bard

Installation: February 1–23
Live Performances: February 1–3 and 7–9

On a night with a sudden electricity outage in their Beirut neighborhood, the artist and her historian husband discussed the history of power cuts in Lebanon. Born during the Lebanese Civil War, the artist had grown up with the understanding that the problem with electricity in Lebanon began during the war. The historian, however, recalled finding a government document dated 1952 that announced scheduled electricity outages across Beirut. The two decided to research the history of power outages in Lebanon, delving into the intersection between public utilities infrastructure, people’s relationship to the state, and various popular mobilizations to shape both.

In time, they reach as far back as the introduction of electricity in Beirut before it was even possible to imagine a Lebanese state. In space, they collect documents across Lebanon and beyond its borders, visiting the archives of colonial powers: Belgium, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. What they find is a transnational story that locates electricity at the intersection of colonial legacies, the machinations of political and economic elites, and everyday acts of resistance, survival, and sabotage.

🎧 The installation is open from February 1–23. On performance days (February 1–3 and 7–9), exhibit hours are 11 am – 4 pm. On days when there are no performances, exhibit hours are Monday through Sunday 11 am – 5 pm.

The open installation experience is approximately 45 minutes. The last admission for the open installation will be one hour before the museum’s closing.

The open installation does not require a ticket or reservation.

On Friday, December 6, we “topped out” the structure of our new Performing Arts Lab, designed by Maya Lin in partnership with architects Bialosky and Partners and theater and acoustic consultants Charcoalblue. The building is constructed by Consigli Construction Co., Inc. 🌲

The Performing Arts Lab will serve as the home for Fisher Center LAB, the Fisher Center’s artist residency and commissioning program.

The building will also house rehearsal and teaching facilities for artists at all stages of their careers, including students from Bard College's undergraduate programs in Dance and Theater & Performance.

With a sloping grass-covered roof, the spiral-shaped building will appear to emerge from the surrounding meadow, encircling a grassy courtyard for outdoor classes, gatherings, and performances.
