Winter sowing is the ultimate low-maintenance way to get a head start on spring! With just an empty water jug, some seed-starting mix, and your favorite seeds, you can let nature do the work. By planting seeds outdoors in winter, they naturally stratify, toughen up, and burst into life as soon as the weather warms—just like they would in the wild! It’s foolproof, space-saving, and perfect for cold-hardy annuals and perennials.
Good Candidates for Winter Sowing:
💐 Flowers: Snapdragons, echinacea, sweet peas, rudbeckia
🥗 Veggies: Spinach, broccoli, peas, kale
How to Do It:
1️⃣ Prep the Jug – Cut it in half, leaving a hinge near the handle, and poke drainage holes in the bottom.
2️⃣ Plant Your Seeds – Fill the jug with seed-starting mix and sow your seeds as directed.
3️⃣ Seal & Label – Tape the jug closed and mark it with the plant name.
4️⃣ Set It & Forget It – Place it outside and let nature take over until spring!
Come spring, you’ll have strong, healthy seedlings ready to plant—no grow lights or indoor space required!
Happy planting! 🌿✨
