It was 1980 something in the world I grew up in; growing up only blocks from the annual Florida Seafood Festival, I was able to enjoy the excitement of set up and preparations every year and attended each year. Like many of us in the community, it is something special to me. I feel the anticipation growing when the first fall breeze hits. Now, 40 years later, I am fortunate to be on the volunteer board of the Florida Seafood Festival and in my 21st year. This year is shaping up to be a special one. The rides have returned thanks to the hard work of Christina Collins and the rest of the board. We can announce we have more Arts & Crafts Booths, Commercial Booths, and Food Booths than in the last 20 years, and the weather looks to be great.
I want to thank the members of the ALL-Volunteer Board who give up their free time to do this for our community. Ted Mosteller, who has been on the board for 58 years, Carl Whaley, Michael Shuler, Tress Dameron, Christina Collins, Anthony Croom, Danielle Layne, and Tiffany Lemieux; when other people say “I don’t know how you do it having full-time jobs and lives” we simply say because when you love something it isn’t work, it's about the community that we love.
On Friday Join us for the Blessing of the Fleet, the Opening Ceremonies, and Carnival Rides, and Christian music in the evening, leading up to the headline performance by Riley Clemmons.
On Saturday participate in the Redfish Run, enjoy the Parade, and compete in the Oyster Eating and Shucking Contests. Don’t miss the Blue Crab Races, followed by an exciting evening of music headlined by Country Star Mark Wills.
Now it's 2020 Something in the world we are in now, and I have to think that somewhere in the crowd, there is a young person who is taking in the sounds and smells and falling in love with the Florida Seafood Festival like I did all those years ago. I hope that one day, they will be part of this volunteer board, keeping the tradition alive for years to come. We invite everyone to Battery Park in Apalachicola on November 1st & 2nd for the 61st annual Florida Seafood Festival.
