It was just like this Turkey weekend, when the crime of the gorilla head kidnapping occurred. Much concern and sadness was expressed about our beloved gorilla. From the mechanic shop in sherwood who offered to fix em backup. to The the moms who called to tell us that their child cried when they heard about it.

APPLETON, Wis. — The head of a mechanical gorilla is back where it belongs, reattached and on display outside an Appleton store, after a YouTube posting and anonymous tip tracked it to a Minnesota residence.

Thieves took the head of the gorilla outside Balloon Magic/Gorilla Grams on Nov. 28, 2008 and business owner Elizabeth soon posted a video on YouTube offering a $1,000 reward for its return.

The tipster saw the video and alerted Appleton police the head was in Minneapolis.

According to Appleton police Sgt. Michael Daul, Minneapolis Detective James Jensen went to the residence and had no trouble spotting the gorilla. But the saga isn’t over for the two Minneapolis men, ages 24 and 28, who had it. Police are recommending charges of damage and theft.

One is originally from Oshkosh, and both had been in the area for Thanksgiving weekend.

“He said they had it sitting on their kitchen table as a decorative centerpiece.”

The head was returned and reattached, and the gorilla went back on display Thursday afternoon.

The new larger shop, at the corner of Wisconsin & Richmond Avenue, added an espresso bar in 1995. Pioneering the cold brewed coffee method, it’s one of older continuously running coffee shops in the valley. The Gorilla was the original character that started delivering balloons to the home, office or restaurant. It popularity lead to the need for more characters. Like the Grim Reaper, Beulah the Nurse and Gramps “The World Oldest Stripper.” It’s still a local mom and pops place whose only desire is to make people smile. Its dancing gorilla has been doing just that for 36 years and counting.
