Our photo of Kaitlyn and Sheldon just won an honorable mention in the Junebug 2025 Best of the Best Destination Photo Contest!

Astrophotography is always a delicate process, between the weather, the light pollution, and the moon. Shortly after sunset, we parked our cars at the top of a mountain pass and laid blankets out on the ground while we waited for it to get dark enough to see the Milky Way. Normally, sitting in the dark for over an hour would be boring, but we had such great conversations with Kaitlyn and Sheldon.

There was a distant thunderstorm across the mountains, in the exact direction we knew the Milky Way would be. We worried that maybe it would block our view, but instead, it cleared the air for the most vivid view of the Milky Way we've ever seen!

When the weather, timing, and location are just right, you can experience one of our favorite natural phenomenon, alpenglow.

Alpenglow is when the mountaintops glow with pink or orange light, just before sunrise or just after sunset. This is part of the reason we always try to anchor an elopement day around one of these two times!

Just because you’re eloping, it doesn’t mean you can’t go all out. 🪩

Kayla grew up dancing and wanted to have their first dance choreographed. But with her and Quincy’s busy schedules, they weren’t able to take in-person lessons. Luckily, they found lessons online. So they learned to dance together in their living room with their pup, Nala, as their audience.

On the evening of their elopement, as the sun set behind the mountains, they performed their dance in front of their first human audience (us). And it was so much fun!

The photos from your elopement that mean the most to you might change over time. We post a lot of the pretty couples in pretty landscapes because thanks to Instagram, that’s what gets clicks. But one of the most underrated aspects of our work is capturing candid moments with couples and their families.

An elopement lets you, the couple, be more vulnerable with one another. But it also lets the handful of family and friends you may invite be more vulnerable too.

Dez and Iliana’s bond with their guests was evident and on full display at their elopement this past weekend. Iliana’s sisters were so happy they sobbed more than once. Dez’s mom couldn’t have looked more proud during their walk down the aisle or their first dance together. Iliana’s grandma held both of them tight to express her love for them, and also laughed hysterically with one of their best friends. I don’t think anyone present (us included) escaped with dry eyes.

We love elopements for the privacy and solitude and intention. And that includes the moments that are slightly less private but still so full of intention.

Are you eloping with guests, but still want that quiet moment to share your vows without anyone present? Consider a private vow exchange! This allows you to have both experiences of a ceremony with your loved ones in addition to a private ceremony for just you and your partner.

In general, having guests will limit your location options for your ceremony. So having a private vow exchange can also be a great way to have a ceremony in your dream location. Choose the location that is more difficult to get to (whether that's hiking, off-roading, or just a further drive from town) for your private vow exchange, and then have your larger ceremony in a space that's a little bit easier for everyone to get to (but maybe doesn't have as magical of a view).

Hear us out. We know it sounds a little odd to get dressed in the wilderness on your elopement day. But tree branches are a better place for your hangers than a closet, and no hotel room will have views quite like Mother Nature.

(And if you’re like C+J from slide 8, you can even have your guests join in on the fun, too!)

The time of day you choose for your elopement will have a big impact on your photos! This is one of the many reasons we recommend hiring someone who is a local expert for your elopement day, because we’ve seen every version of the places we recommend!

Vow of the Wild turns 10 today! 🥳

10 years ago Lisa was 21 and Alex was 23. We naively decided that we were going to start a business together, before we were even engaged, with no thought of how hard owning your own business might be. Lisa even says now that she didn’t realize what a commitment it was to start a business with her boyfriend.

Today, Lisa is 31 and Alex is 33. Along the way we’ve learned a lot about business, ourselves, and our relationship. The formative years of our 20s were spent making it all up as we went. At so many points along the way this all could have fallen apart. But through a lot of good luck and a lot of long days, somehow we made it.

In the last 10 years, we’ve worked with over 250 couples in 13 different states and 8 different countries. In the beginning, we craved the adventure of traveling and we have so many fond memories of exploring new places with our couples. Today, we love sharing Colorado, a place we love and know so well, with our couples.

We feel so fortunate to have worked with sooo many incredible couples, and we feel even more lucky to be able to call so many of you lifelong friends.

Cheers to 10 more years! (as long as our knees and backs will allow it)

Want to add some color to your Colorado elopement? Consider eloping during wildflower season! Wildflowers are abundant at higher elevations throughout the state from mid-July to mid-August.

Being a weather forecaster in Colorado can be looked at in two ways:

1. The most difficult job in the state because the weather in Colorado is famously hard to predict.
2. The easiest job in the state because no one expects you to get it right in the first place.

Afternoon thunderstorms are very common in the Colorado mountains, and for that reason, we try to “anchor” elopement days either around sunrise or sunset (or our favorite option of both), when the chance of thunderstorms isn’t as high.

But, Colorado weather is going to do whatever it wants. So we always recommend that our couples be prepared for any type of weather, including snow!
