The first class of the 2024 Southwest Reining Horse Association Futurity & Horse Show on Friday, Oct. 18 is still two days away, but when entries for the Rancho Los Palominos Non Pro Futurity closed at noon on Wednesday, the news was exciting.
That’s because there are 66 entries in the Futurity – an increase of 17 from last year.
“It’s exciting to see the entry numbers in the Rancho Los Palominos Non Pro Futurity grow by over 30 percent this year,” said Cheryl Cody of the SWRHA Futurity Management Team, adding that late entries will still be taken up until 6 p.m. Thursday.
In 2023, Gina Maria Schumacher piloted Reining Royalty (Spooks Gotta Whiz x Bella Della) to the Level 4 Non Pro Championship, earning $8,151. Kelsey Price, who tied for Reserve in the Level 4 and won Levels 3 and 2, earned $11,224 on Bringing Chexy Back (A Sparkling Vintage x Chexanicki). Lindsay Kovick and Shesinmypocket (In Like Flinn x A Smart Gun) won the Level 1, finished second in Levels 2 and 3, and placed in the L4 for more than $8,000 in earnings, and David Silva and Working On A Shiner (Smart And Shiney x Reminic At Work) took the Prime Time Non Pro title and placed in other levels to pocket just over $3,000.
There’s more than just big money on the line. The SWRHA Futurity is known for great prizes, including those for stallion owners!
“Most of the added money for the SWRHA Futurity comes from the proceeds of the annual Stallion Service Auction. A custom SWRHA golf cart goes to the sire of the highest-placing Level 4 Non Pro if that stallion was part of the auction with a sold breeding,” explained Lindsey McCutcheon, who spearheads the auction each year. “Our stallion owners give so much each year, and we appreciate their support of the SWRHA.”
The Rancho Los Palominos Non Pro Futurity, which features $66,000 in added money, is the official start of an exciting week at the Hardy Murphy Coliseum in Ardmore, Oklahoma. The SWRHA Futurity & Horse Show is annually one of the top events of the National Reining Horse Association, and is considered one of the last chances to test the mettle of 3-year-old reiners before they compete at the NRHA Futurity just a month later.
Along with the Futurity, the event also features two full slates of NRHA-approved classes.
