Real talk from a small business owner...

Everything seen in this floral piece cost me money. But there's far more to it.

What you don't see...
The container, the foam that holds it all together. The solution and finishing spray that helps with longevity, the card pic, card and envelope you get when you buy it. If you take it with you and want a box that costs as does the tissue paper that packs it all together. If it's delivered, gas, time, auto maintenance, insurance is all costs we have to figure into the delivery charge. There's the POS system that inputs the sale, and the software, the receipt and an order form, it all costs. Bank fees too if you used a credit card. The building you walked into costs, so does the water, electricity, heat, and the list goes on.

The list of expenses continue on and on and on! Insurance, payroll, etc, etc, etc.

For some reason, people are shocked when we have to explain that the floral industry has been hit hard with increased costs. As if they think our industry is exempt. I'm here to say, it's not! A few years ago, I could charge $3.50 for Snapdragon. That's following the standard pricing structure within our industry. Today, a Snapdragon, a commodity type of flower, is $6.50!!! There's some flowers that I won't consider buying anymore because they're simply not worth the price and sadly, lack the quality.

All the operating costs I mentioned, are also factored into the costs I pay for from vendors. It a vicious cycle.

This is why we've had to cut way back on donations. To the point, that this year most requests have had to be declined. Even 1 or 2 bouquets cost, but times that by the 100 plus requests we get annually and well, that's a lot.

When you support small businesses, you're supporting people who show up everyday and roll with the punches. You support people who are barely able to pay their leases, you support people who believe in themselves, who have scarificed a lot, you support families, you support people who in turn, support you. You support people who work hard and barely pay themselves for the endless hours they put in. You support people who lay awake at night wondering how all those bills are going to get paid, sometimes they don't pay themselves. You support people vested in their communities.

We are small business owners, the backbone of America, but are in no way supported by those who run this country, instead, we continue to be taken advantage of. But, I for one will continue the upward battle because I have a very stubborn streak that runs deep in my veins.
