Today's routes may qualify for other Current (and Expired) Special Programs, check with the Finish Table to be sure you receive all the stamps earned on your route today. We will stamp any AVA Special Program book for which the walker feels the event qualifies The US FreedomWalk Festival is a member of two walking organizations: the American Volkssport Association and the International Marching League. The American Volkssport Association (AVA) is the American affiliate of the International Volkssport Federation (IVV). Member clubs of the AVA and IVV put on non-competitive athletic events, mostly walking, but also bike, swim and cross-country skiing events. The walking events are commonly referred to as volksmarches. All events are open to the public, and, as stated, non-competitive. Awards (certificates, hatpins, metals and patches) are given out upon completion of set numbers of events and/or distances. The International Marching League. Walking Association (IML). IML events are multiple days, usually two days, but sometimes three or four, and to earn the IML award, at least 20 km must be walked each of the primary walking days. The IML normally sanctions only one walk per country, although they will make an exception for events that are significant distances apart. The two largest walking events in the world, Nijmegen in the Netherlands and Higashi-Matsuyama in Japan, are IML sanctioned events. The event was created in 2000 to welcome walkers from all over the world to the nation's capital city in friendship. This walking event is hosted by the Office of the Surgeon General of the United States; Arlington County, Virginia; the World Affairs Council of Washington, DC; the Embassies; and AVA Club 901. The walk is a three-day civil and military, noncompetitive walk for everyone. It promotes friendship and education about the United States and other countries. This is not a charity walk. Start at your leisure each day during the start period and walk at your own pace. Everyone must register at the start location. With so much to see, start early. This is a family event for all ages. You choose your desired course based on your abilities and personal desires. The walk is for your health. Register at USFreedomWalk.org

Good luck in tonight’s contest between the Canada and the USA…

Tonight, in the ultimate “battle across the border”, team members from the US FreedomWalk Festival will judge the best in maple leaf cookies. Can the official maple leaf cookie of the Marche Maple Leaf March * stand up to the upstart sold in the United States? Both are “Fabriqué au Canada” according to the boxes, but is the US product like “M0ls0n Export Ale”— just an inferior version sold to those who don’t have a clue?

Good luck in tonight’s contest!

*Tradition 1905 maple cookies are provided at the end of trails during the annual October walking festival sanctioned in Ottawa by the IML Walking Association and Canadian Volkssport Federation.

Honoring the Founders of IML Events

During the opening ceremony at the 24th annual US FreedomWalk Festival in Arlington, Virginia, the founding team members of the newest event on the IML Walking Association calendar, the Marche Maple Leaf March , were honored.

For over a decade the leadership of the USFWF has honored founders of IML events by presenting a unique gold star and wreath pin. This pin adds the leadership star to the volunteer wreath pin seen in a previous post. This pin can be worn on the local walking medal or worn alone.

The founders and leaders of all the events deserve special recognition for their steadfast contributions that make the IML program possible around the world.

Congratulations to Eric B. and Marilyn L. who received new founders pins. In a new tradition, the co-founder of the USFWF, Tim M., took off his founders pin and presented it to Stephan K. with the charge to “pass it on” as a way to “keep the IML spirit alive.”

Both events are co-sponsored by the IML and the International Federation of Popular Sports (IVV).

Celebrating THREE Generations of Walking Achievement

The U.S. FreedomWalk Festival wants to give a BIG shoutout to TEAM BARRETT for three generations of walking and Volkssport success this year.

During the closing ceremony at the 24th annual event in Arlington, Virginia, Dennis Barrett received the PAN PACIFIC award from the IML Walking Association. With him on the trail was his wife, their daughter, and granddaughter who was collecting IVV (International Federation of Popular Sports) event and distace credit in her “New Walker Packet” from America's Walking Club, and stamping events in her first IML logbook. Her mother’s backpack tells the story of the Barrett family sharing the love of the walk across many decades and generations which includes the IML’s newest event in Ottawa, Marche Maple Leaf March , which took place the week prior.

Thank you to this walking team for being a wonderful role model for families everywhere around the world. The USFWF is grateful to these walkers for joining others from 13 countries and 18 states to show that .
