Velveeta’s gene pool and incredible disposition will help produce some incredible service dogs. Velveeta lives a great life in California alongside her mama, Dory. We now await puppy #3 from Velveeta’s first litter!”

Canine Companions also works with other working dog organizations to help develop, care for, and train the best dogs for jobs. A recent book called “Puppy Kindergarten” highlights the process at Duke University, where researchers studied different groups of CCI puppies. They did some incredible work to observe what behaviors and personalities in puppies, even as young as 8 weeks old, could indicate being great candidates for future working dogs.

Enjoy “Inside the Mind of a Dog” on Netflix for your next movie night. This extraordinary documentary shows the development and research done in the Duke University Puppy Kindergarten study. It is a great way to get a view of this incredible work.

“In professional training, my first dog, Dory, was chosen by Canine Companions to become a breeder for the organization. Canine Companions has done extensive genetic and behavioral work to ensure they always produce and raise puppies that are wired to be great service dogs. Dory was chosen because of her excellence in physical health, temperament, and disposition from her training. One fun fact about Dory is that nothing scares or shocks her. She could handle any loud or tricky situation without glancing at it. This behavior is highly sought after in service dog candidates.

In October 2022, Dory moved to San Jose, California, to begin her next phase of helping produce new future service dogs. We were thrilled because we knew our next puppy to raise for CCI would be one of hers. Dory is living a loving and posh life in San Jose, and we are lucky to still be in contact with her new owner/caretaker.”

When you are out and about, it can be so exciting to see a working service dog and their handler in action. It’s easy to be quickly drawn to admire or want to pet the working dog. However, it is vital to know the rules surrounding working dogs.

Here are some tips and recommendations when encountering a working dog team.

1. Don’t touch the dog without asking permission first. This distraction may prevent the dog from focusing on their human partner. Be sensitive to the fact the dog is working and may be in the middle of a command or direction from its human partner. Most dogs must be told to be “released” from work mode to interact with someone.

2. Please don’t feed the dog. It may be on a special diet. Food is the ultimate distraction to the working dog and can jeopardize the working service dog team.

3. Speak to the person, not the service dog. Most handlers do not mind talking about their service dog if they have the time. They often enjoy it!

4. Do not whistle or make sounds to the dog; this may be a dangerous distraction.

5. Never make assumptions about the individual’s intelligence, feelings, or capabilities. Offers of help are appreciated, but ask first. Usually, the human/dog team can do the task themselves.

These tips apply when you see puppies in training as well. The best practice is to ask the handler before ever touching or interacting with the working dog or training puppy.

“In August 2022, we turned Dory into professional training, or as we call it “Puppy College, for the last stages of her training.

During professional training, the puppies spend 6 to 9 months building specific skills to help assist their future handler. These tasks include picking up dropped items, opening doors, closing drawers, turning on lights, and more.

As a puppy raiser, the question I get asked is most is, “Is it hard to give them back?” The honest answer: Yes, it feels like a piece of your heart is missing. It is one of the most bittersweet moments of the journey. However, seeing how this puppy you poured so much into will now make an incredible impact on the person they serve, makes it worth it.
Sometimes, the most challenging things are also the most beautiful.”

This year, Canine Companions is celebrating 50 years.

In the last 50 years, they have placed over 8,000 graduate teams of dogs and recipients. There are 2,700+ active graduate teams nationwide, and volunteers have raised 1,100+ puppies to be service dogs. Canine Companions has six regional training centers across the US.

Once the puppies turn 16 months, they leave their puppy trainer and begin professional training at one of these training centers. We are lucky to have a CCI center right here in Irving!

“In June 2021, I began my puppy-raising journey with Canine Companions. My first dog, Dory, arrived full of love and a little saltiness.

We started our 14-month journey together to prepare her to become a service dog. I had no idea how much this puppy would teach me. She helped me learn an increased level of patience and how to prioritize my time even better, and I was able to meet a whole new community of friends who are fellow puppy raisers.

One of the unique parts of being a puppy raiser is how you truly savor and enjoy each season of the year. When you know you only get one fall or one spring with your puppy in training, you take all the photos and never miss a moment of the joy of that season with the puppy.

During my birthday month, I want to celebrate by donating $1 for every cookie sold to Canine Companions - I hope you’ll stop by!” 🐾 ❤️
