The sensational Sally Anne Morgan will be supporting the legendary Michael Hurley on Wednesday, March 26th, for what will certainly be an unmissable show. Multi-instrumentalist Sally Anne Morgan honors the ritual traditions of folk, yet incorporates nonconformist avant-garde experimentalism to thrilling results, a sound that is truly her own. We have less than 40 tickets remaining - don’t sleep - get your tickets now at the link in our bio!

Sally Anne Morgan
Sally Anne Morgan’s music is elevated by her deft musical skills and her remarkably expressive voice that together create wholly new folk forms, familiar in their instrumentation yet distinctly her own. ‘Carrying’ tills the rich soil of Appalachian traditions and Sally’s rural North Carolina surroundings into warm, reflective songs about navigating challenges, as well as the most joyous and personal emotions surrounding Morgan’s own pregnancy and recent birth of her first child.

Morgan is a master craftsman and a true modern folk artist. The root of her songs share the roots of many great folk songs: “I find myself writing songs in praise of certain things in a very religious way but …more about holy compost than any other spiritual tradition I know of.” The songs born of these roots are entirely modern, expressive and wonderfully unique, a beautiful new voice advancing the folk form.

Don’t miss your chance to catch Sister Sadie, who will make their way to our intimate little listening room between support dates for superstars like Trampled By Turtles and Old Crow Medicine Show. This might be your last chance to catch this bluegrass supergroup before they start headlining stadiums too. Get your tickets now!

Sister Sadie

Sister Sadie is a wildfire: raging hot bluegrass combined with breathtaking instrumental drive and awe-inspiring vocals. Comprised of original members Deanie Richardson (fiddle), Gena Britt (banjo & vocals) and newcomers Jaelee Roberts (guitar & vocals), Dani Flowers (guitar & vocals), and Maddie Dalton (acoustic bass & vocals), Sister Sadie has combined the varied talents of each of the individual women in the lineup to create something that is far more than the sum of its parts. It is a sound uniquely their own. Yes, it’s undeniably classic, hard-driving bluegrass, but it’s much more than just that. Rooted in forceful and tight vocal harmonies, this isn’t your granddaddy’s Appalachian high lonesome sound. This is something far more powerful than that—it’s the sound of the mountains themselves.

Virtuosic composer Clive Carroll will take the APLR stage in just a few weeks, on Tuesday, February 11th. Don’t miss your chance to catch Carroll, who has been lauded as a peerless acoustic fingerstylist, whose innovative playing seamlessly draws from folk, blues, and classical techniques, blending each form to create a wholly unique sound. Tickets are now available at the link in our bio!

Clive Carroll
British acoustic maestro Clive Carroll has always pushed the boundaries of the instrument, and that’s clearly in evidence on his fourth album - a collection of acoustic fingerstyle pieces written, in the main, over the last five years. A true virtuoso with a stunningly clean technique, Carroll blends his influences seamlessly as The Furthest Tree moves from its hymnal opener through the blues-tinged In the Deep, the Celtic ballad vibe of Lady of the Valley and the classically-inspired A Renaissance Suite - a five-part duet with classical guitar legend John Williams.

One of Clive’s party pieces, A Winter Carol, also makes an appearance - it’s a truly unsettling track, comprising two melodies in different keys and tempos, but arranged for solo guitar. We’re not sure what’s scarier - the horror-film harmonies or the fact that Clive can actually play it! The fleet-fingered and folky technical workout of The Adventures of Wilfred has a lighter mood and puts us in mind of some of the fiery playing on 2004’s The Red Guitar. Clive’s fans are a devoted bunch and will likely enjoy every sublimely delivered note here. Newer listeners may find Clive’s 2009 album, Life in Colour an easier introduction to this incredible player. - Chris Bird - TOTAL GUITAR Magazine

The final meeting of the Experimental Meditation Club is upon us. Join us tonight for the last installment of January’s residency with , .kelbel , and . Let us use the tools that we’ve honed throughout the series to process the grief of this wonderful program coming to an end. Don’t weep, it’s simply the season changing, and who knows, maybe the Spring will blossom into another run with everyone’s favorite users of the astral plane. We’ll see! 😉

Every Tuesday in January, we convene as the Experimental Meditation Club.

We’ll provide partially guided meditations with sonic accompaniment. Think breaths to let go of tension, sonic ambiance, a bit of grief work, heavy drones, and psychedelic introspection. While everyone is welcome, this will be tailored to people who are new to meditation.
The event begins at 7:30 sharp, so please be prompt to avoid disruption.

Each night will include some context, a guided meditation around the theme, a short conversation (no one is required to talk so introverts don’t run away please), and a longer meditation using only sound.

Night Four, Tuesday, Jan 28: Growth
Cool, yes, most of us want this- to grow. We often want it to just happen, and are sometimes resistant to the amount of work it requires and the level of change. We know that change is inevitable and a shapeshifter that’s difficult to control. What if we greet it, invite it in for a warm cup of tea, because life is hard and change is part of it (as frustrating as that sounds)?

Note: This is a rough plan and plans change so we aren’t 100% sure that it will stay exactly like this. We just wanted to give you an idea of what to expect, and invite you to be okay with the plan changing. Look at us- we’re already doing the work.

Some cushions, blankets, and backjacks are provided - feel free to bring anything that will help you get cozy and some openness.

Just Announced: On Wednesday, March 26th, APLR and Harvest Records present a rare performance from Doc Snock himself, the iconic multidisciplinary artist and “freak-folk” architect, Michael Hurley, who has been revolutionary throughout his storied career with an unmatched canon in folk, blues, and jazz music. This is one for the books. Get your tickets now at https://ayurpranalisteningroom.com.

Michael Hurley

Michael Hurley grew up in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. As a teenager in the 1950s he fell in love hearing the music of Fats Domino, The Everly Brothers and Bo Diddley blast from the radio, and was enthralled by the records of Blind Willie McTell, Hank Williams and Uncle Dave Macon that he sought for his own. This love for music, true and unvarnished, supplied him with a finely tuned musical compass he has not wavered from for 50 years and counting. Hurley’s music sounds old, like it has always existed, and simultaneously singular, like something you’ve never heard anyone else play quite like that before. This timeless quality ensures that Hurley’s audience constantly renews itself. From the the beatniks in the NYC Village where he started in the early 60s, to the hippies in Vermont, to the Americana fans, indie rockers and freak folkers from the last two decades, Michael’s music never fails to find fresh new ears. Pressed for a description, Hurley has called it “jazz-hyped blues and country and western music”.

Hurley’s early records were released on Folkways, Warner Brothers/Raccoon, and Rounder, while in recent years stalwart independent labels like No Quarter, Feeding Tube, and Mississippi have been carrying the torch. The great news is that there is no stopping Michael Hurley. His 2021 album, The Time Of The Foxgloves on No Quarter Records received rave reviews world wide. A new album for the same label is in the can. Besides being a truly unique musician, Hurley is also a cartoonist and watercolor artist of note — the instantly recognizable results of which grace his album covers.

Just Announced: Join us Monday, March 3rd for Jon Mueller + Tom Lecky: All Colors Present, an exhibit featuring the exhilaratingly hypnotic percussion of Jon Mueller paired with the photography of Tom Lecky. Supporting the installation, we have experimental composers Brett W. Naucke, Weston Olencki, and Kelsey Wilson, and some visual surprises up our sleeve. Tickets are available at the link in the bio!

JON MUELLER + TOM LECKY: ALL COLORS PRESENT
A sound and visual meditation

Jon Mueller’s singular performance idiom is an awe-inspiring display of elegant athleticism, preternatural focus, brute restraint, and ecstatic, monastic reverie. Paired with Tom Lecky’s photographs, it becomes a deliberate focus on form, shape and detail. It requires and demands a state of inner quietude from witnesses. Yet, from this seemingly metronomic exercise blossoms every possible tint and hue of infinite spectral sound.

Brett W. Naucke
Brett William Naucke (b. 1985) is an American experimental composer and visual artist from Chicago, IL currently based in Asheville, NC. Naucke’s sonic output has been primarily focused on marrying an ever-evolving practice of synthesis with conceptual narratives.
Weston Olencki
I am a composer, musician, and audio engineer; originally from South Carolina; living and working now in Berlin. I’m currently making work focused around questions of instrumental music and its contexts/constructs, and the technological, material, and cultural histories of vernacular art-making. My recent music deals with the non-linear relationships between experimental sound, geography, historicity, and (mostly American) musical traditions.
Kelsey Wilson
Kelsey Wilson is a drummer, composer, and sound artist from Atlanta, Georgia.
“…sonic environments reflecting on religion in the Southeast from Atlanta, GA drummer and sound artist Kelsey Wilson, using organ, tapes and field recordings to create dark and brooding meditations intended for loud playback, five opaquely layered constructions of ambience and drone…”

Just Announced: Ambient power trio Cowboy Sadness, feat members of The Antlers, Bing & Ruth, & Port St. Willow, will make their AVL debut on Sunday, March 30th after performing at Big Ears. Cowboy Sadness will not only bring one of their rare and stunning sets, they will also host an intimate, immersive, improvisational sound bath in the afternoon. We have tickets available for the sound bath, concert, and a bundle including both - please note each ticket before you purchase, to ensure you’re buying the event you wish to attend.

Sound Bath ::: Doors 2 PM || Show 3 PM
Performance ::: Doors 6 PM || Show 7 PM

Cowboy Sadness
What is the true sound of a red-orange sun emerging just above the horizon? What’s the sonic equivalent of a monolithic butte towering high above a vacant valley, as menacing thunderheads form in the distance?

The answers lie in the atmospheric & sprawling debut from Cowboy Sadness - a new collaborative project from The Antlers, Bing & Ruth, & Port St. Willow.
The stylistic signatures of each member - Moore’s heavy, undulating organs, Silberman’s melancholic guitars, & Principe’s galloping, hypnotic drums - form thick textures, cavernous spaces, & deep grooves.

“Selected Jambient Works Vol.1” is the summation of over a decade of work. With sounds more akin to Pink Floyd and Can than John Cage, the album is an odyssey through vivid, mercurial environments for the listener to inhabit continuously, unpeopled landscapes where signs of life are rare, but exquisite when uncovered.

Just Announced: We’re incredibly excited to announce An Evening with Caroline Rose, who will perform a rare stripped-down set at APLR as a part of their tour of small independent music venues handpicked by Rose. Tickets are now available at the link in our bio - don’t sleep, they will move fast!

Caroline Rose
“I’m not a McDonald’s hamburger,” says Caroline Rose, a Grammy-nominated artist who has become known for being somewhat of an impish indie rebel, playfully blending psychobilly, pop, shoegaze, alt-country, folk, and experimental electronica into their songs. “I’ve just been trying to make music diverse enough that AI can’t reproduce it.” For years an outspoken champion of the working class of the music industry, Rose will perform solo this spring in all small independent venues hand-picked by the artist and their team. “I love these little clubs, I can connect with the audience so much more. I honestly just miss it and am mostly doing this because I think it’ll be really fun.”

Join us tonight for another cosmic voyage in the Experimental Meditation Club, where your hosts, .kelbel and , will lead guided meditation with transcendental soundscapes. The event begins at 7:30 sharp, so please be prompt to avoid disruption.

Every Tuesday in January, we’ll convene as the Experimental Meditation Club:

We’ll provide partially guided meditations with sonic accompaniment. Think breaths to let go of tension, sonic ambiance, a bit of grief work, heavy drones, and psychedelic introspection. While everyone is welcome, this will be tailored to people who are new to meditation.

Each night will include some context, a guided meditation around the theme, a short conversation (no one is required to talk so introverts don’t run away please), and a longer meditation using only sound.

Tuesday, Jan. 21: Self-Compassion
I know what you’re thinking. Eeeeeew and vomit, right? Oh, I’m projecting? That’s how I used to view self-compassion, but you know those people who love themselves? I’m trying to be one of them, without being totally insufferable to be around. Hopefully, you’re thinking self-compassion sounds nice! It’s a tool to help us like ourselves and extend that to others. It’s also a tool for grief.

Note: This is a rough plan and plans change so we aren’t 100% sure that it will stay exactly like this. We just wanted to give you an idea of what to expect and invite you to be okay with the plan changing. Look at us- we’re already doing the work.

Some cushions, blankets, and backjacks are provided - please feel free to bring your tools for comfort as well.

The Krüger Brothers
In their ever-expanding body of work, Jens Kruger (banjo and vocals), Uwe Kruger (guitar and lead vocals), and Joel Landsberg (bass and vocals) together as The Kruger Brothers personify the spirit of exploration and innovation that forms the core of the American musical tradition. Tickets for this wildly stacked bill are now live! Austin’s premier drone zoners Water Damage make their Asheville debut alongside the dub-infused-jazz of Bristol UK’s Tara Clerkin Trio, and the brilliant guitar explorations of Edsel Axle. Get your tickets at the link in our bio!

Water Damage
Drones are a powerful force, capable of whisking our thinking mind far, far, away. Austin-based collective Water Damage yields the same power whenever they pick up their instruments. Veterans from other projects (a.o. Spray Paint, Black Eyes, Swans, more eaze, USA/Mexico), the band is not unfamiliar with the unshakeable power of music; still, as WaterDamage, they stretch out drone’s possibilities to their limits, bowing to the principle ‘MaximalRepetition Minimal Deviation’. Once an idea takes off, they pursue it forever; as Pitchfork said, their 2024 double LP ‘In E’ doubles as a “glorious mind eraser”.

Tara Clerkin Trio
Their inspirations might be centreless, but the trio still possess a very obvious anchor in the form of their hometown. Bristol stands as a city of multitudes, heterogenous and vibrant in such a way as to allow it to renew and remake time and again. Tara Clerkin Trio drink from that same well, duly reflecting a rich musical heritage built on fwd-facing electronic subcultures and experimental urges. As such, On The Turning Ground finds them subject to their own subtle internal evolution, the pervasive sense that you’ve caught them mid-bloom, on their way to becoming but never anything but themselves.

Edsel Axle
On this newest collection of tunes, “Variable Happiness”, under the moniker Edsel Axle, Rosali Middleman’s voice takes a winter hibernation to showcase the prodigious slow burn thump of her solo electric guitar playing. Recorded directly to a four-track cassette rig in the comfort of her own home- each chord struck exhales from the gear and onto magnetic tape, finding its true north, and throwing sand on the bonfire before it burns the foundation. First thought/best thought improvisations naturally trickling down and turning puddles into expansive streams of sound.
