I welcomed my first Newborn (into a rental studio) since Hurricane Helene, last week!!!🥰 Sweetly, it was my second time photographing a newborn for this family (I photographed their maternity + newborn portraits for their oldest daughter, 6 years ago!) 💕
This precious girl’s mama said that after everything + the chaos of running a business after a natural disaster and raising children —- she almost didn’t shoot maternity and newborn portraits with this pregnancy but then her oldest (who is obsessed with the photos I shot when her mama was pregnant with her) questioned if she would do it for this baby….. and while her heart may not have necessarily been (in) it, Jessica understood what she would loose by skipping it for this new baby….🥺
Asheville, you’ve been through so much, lost so much….. please remember, these precious milestones are fleeting and still so important for your babies, for your families and I’ll be here for you, when you’re ready!💛 xo - Brittany

Happy Thanksgiving, friends!🧡🦃
Top of the list among all of the things that I am Thankful for this holiday season is the health and safety of my family and friends in Asheville & Western North Carolina. 💛

While I may have lost my studio and my business in Asheville (for the foreseeable future) to Helene, I am grateful for the innate resilience within me, an entrepreneurial spirit and the kindness of my community!

Prior to the storm, about 80% of my clients were tourists visiting Asheville with hopes of capturing our beloved Blue Ridge Mountains in their family portraits….

The tourism industry in Asheville has taken a devastating hit since Helene’s flood waters saturated every aspect this once thriving mountain community… so many have lost so much…. family members, friends, homes, cars, businesses….😔

Sadly, with the tourists not returning for a while (and certainly not in the volume that they once were) and beyond the trauma of what my local clients have been through, portraits just aren’t gonna be all that high on anybody’s priority list for a while… and so, once again, I needed to pivot (again) in order to survive this ‘storm’…

For the last two months, I have been portfolio building in Charleston, South Carolina, in an effort to build something new (to support my family) while Asheville gets back on its feet…

While I’ve been to Asheville several times since the hurricane, shooting portraits there is far less frequent these days…

It was bittersweet to shoot an anniversary session at Biltmore Estate last week for this lovely couple who had planned their anniversary trip to Asheville before the hurricane…

It was wild to behold the ghost town that my once thriving mountain town has become… 😔

If you’re reading this, Asheville needs you…. Not just me, but all of the independent shops, artists, restaurants and hotels need you to come back soon! 💛 until then, consider holiday shopping with some independent shops / artists this Christmas!🎄❤️

Fall is the positively one of the most magical times of the year in Western North Carolina wether you're local or visiting Asheville! Our beloved Blue Ridge Mountains come alive each October with brilliant hues of reds, oranges and yellows! Asheville has long been a popular destination for couples vacationing in Asheville for their Baby Moon before their new baby arrives and I am often asked to shoot Maternity Portraits for them while they're in town! Q: Where should we shoot our BRPW Maternity Photos!?

Choosing a location along the Blue Ridge Parkway for your Maternity Portrait Session is entirely subjective and completely dependent upon your preferences for landscape -- which types of locations and / or geological features of the parkway interest you! The Blue Ridge Parkway has over 70,000 acres of forest, which covers almost 85% of the parkway's 469 miles!
There are some areas of the parkway which feature giant, rocky mountains while others may have rolling hills, forested mountains and grassy balds. There are waterfalls, forest trails, tall grassy fields and spectacular rolling mountain overlooks. Areas in higher elevations have more alpine/ever green trees and areas in lower elevations are going to have more hardwoods, maples, birch and oak trees. All this to say, the Blue Ridge Parkway is incredibly diverse and it's important to consider what types of locations interest you for the backdrop to your Blue Ridge Parkway Maternity Photos!

Q: When should we shoot Blue Ridge Parkway Maternity Photos?

I typically photograph expectant mothers between 30 - 33 weeks. I prefer this time frame because your baby bump has POP'd but you're not yet uncomfortable and retaining water, swelling, etc! Also, this is considered the 'safe zone' because (waiting much later in your pregnancy makes it riskier to plan maternity portraits, the closer you get to your due date!) There are a few important things to consider before scheduling your Maternity Portrait Session on the Blue Ridge Parkway!

Maternity Photos on the Blue Ridge Parkway has long been an incredibly popular choice among locals and tourists visiting our lovely little mountain town! Did you know that Newborn Portrait Sessions require approximately 15 hours of your photographers time!?

Q: How much time do Newborn Portrait Sessions require?
A: In addition to the front end paperwork (contracts / invoices) of booking (1/2hr), approximately (1.5hrs) is spent consulting with my clients via email & phone prior to their Newborn Portrait Sessions. Approximately (1.5hrs) are spent Sourcing and Ordering any needed Specialty Prop Items for my clients' Newborn Sessions. On your Newborn Photoshoot day, the session itself requires approximately 1hr to set up for and 1.5hr to tear down, clean up and sanitize props used for the session. Newborn Portrait Sessions last approximately 3hrs (shooting time) and require approximately (2-3hrs) to edit and deliver your online proof gallery as well as another (2hrs) to complete final, hand edits on your ordered Newborn Portrait Session images and lastly, approximately (1hr) is spent ordering and delivering any purchased print products or digital files from your print order after your session!

That's approximately 15 HOURS of time for just ONE Newborn Portrait Session!

How far in advance should we book our session?

At Asheville Portrait Company, we value family & try really hard to prioritize having a healthy work / life balance. We believe that it directly affects our attitude, energy, creativity and ultimately our success!
As such, we can only take on 5 Newborn Portrait Session Bookings each month. We encourage you to book you session as far in advance as possible to ensure availability for your baby!

In addition to these basic logistical and time constraints, each of our Newborn Portrait Sessions is completely custom and tailored to our clients' preferences for theme and / or color palette for their Baby Girl Session at Asheville Portrait Co Studios! While we do have a very large Newborn Photography Prop Archive which includes everything from infant sized baskets, boxes, buckets and bowls to textiles from posing bag fabric backdrops, newborn wraps, headbands, bonnets and tiny, delicate, handmade outfits for your Newborn Girl Session...

Because each session is custom and tailored to your preference for theme and / or color palette, we often end up ordering at least $150-$200 in new props purchased specifically for your baby's portrait session in order to make your vision for this session come to life! Many of these items are handmade and ordered from artisans on Etsy or other specialty newborn photography prop vendors. Because of this, production and shipping can take a little time, so it's best to book your Newborn Photoshoot as far in advance as possible to allow plenty of time for planning, sourcing, ordering, production and shipping!

Neutrals are always a timeless choice for your Newborn Portrait Sessions! The most common neutrals used in Newborn Photography are Tans, Creams, Whites and Grays. Most of the time, my clients choose neutrals for the main color palette with pops of other color tones incorporated into the set design such as blues, greens or browns for their Newborn Baby Boy Sessions! What makes some place a 'good location' for Family Portrait Sessions? This is most certainly an entirely subjective question because some might say that the best locations are way out in nature, on the tops of mountains or deep in the forest. While others might think that the best locations for Family Photoshoots are locations that are close to home -- in parks or gardens. And still more people might say that they prefer the vibrant colors, textures and architecture of the city! One thing that I really love about shooting Fall Family Photos in Asheville is when the leaves change colors and the sunlight shines through the trees, it creates this warm kaleidoscope of fall color and I am always here for that! When shooting Family Portraits, I typically to position my clients with their backs to the sun so that they are backlit by this gorgeous kaleidoscope of color and the effect is stunning!

Hot Pro Tip for Shooting Family Photos at Max Patch:
Check Apple or Google Maps a couple hours before leaving to see if there's any traffic on I-40 and give yourself extra travel time incase of traffic westbound (which can sometimes happen particularly in the gorge west of Asheville). This is really important if you're planning a sunset family session at Max Patch. Logistically, you only have a limited amount of time to shoot in the hour or so before sunset, if you get caught up in traffic on I-40, get lost etc. and then show up to your session 30 minutes late with a 15-20 minute hike ahead of you, that will leave you with only about 10-15 minutes of daylight left to shoot! You want to be on time!
