It would stand to reason that there were at least as many live births in the years since that last census with so many new families putting down roots in Asheville and it’s surrounding mountain towns! So often, moms are the ones (taking) the photos and as a result, our children don't have all that many photos with us actually in them, to help them to remember their early childhood. It can't be understated how incredibly important it is to have photos of you actually (in) the photos with your children, laughing and smiling and loving on them! These are the moments they won't remember. Trust me when I tell you, you'll want these images for you and for them, a visual reminder --- of just how much they were loved when they were small!

I had somewhat of a non-traditional start to motherhood. I got surprise pregnant when I was 32. I was a bright eyed, adventurous, young, professional living my best life. I was on my way out to hike the PCT for a couple weeks when a layover in Chicago changed my life forever. When I chose life for the baby that I was carrying, I knew that this choice meant that he might be my only baby because logistically, I would be covered up in single motherhood and entrepreneurship for the foreseeable future and that fate was further cemented when a series of personal & family tragedies / traumas occurred in quick succession after my baby was born. Logistically, I knew that I probably wouldn't have the opportunity to fall in love / find my person until I was nearing 40 and so, I began researching the process for freezing my eggs --- which is how I found PREG!

Deciding that you would like to Breastfeed your baby is a huge commitment and it's one that isn't easy. Breastfeeding takes a remarkable amount of dedication and determination and despite what we imagined it might be like, what we read or how easy it looked for others -- it's not easy. Especially for a first time mom! I wish someone had prepared me this truth when I was pregnant and idealistic about how I would breastfeed my baby and it would just come so easily and naturally. Spoiler Alert: it didn't.

Shooting Portrait Sessions during the Spring (with all of the beautiful spring blooms) is totally underrated!!🥰 Here in WNC, everyone clammers for Fall Photos during an incredibly short, 2-3 week window but in my opinion, the Spring Blooms here in the mountains are just as beautiful and you're for sure gonna have stunning photos ready for Christmas cards, none of that waiting until the last possible minute because your images weren't delivered until late November, ordering your cards and hoping the that they will be delivered in time, then rushing to get them addressed and mailed out and praying they arrive before Christmas! Who needs that stress in their life!?

My advice: shoot in the spring (or summer), reduce your holiday stress!

The window of opportunity for spring blooms, while also short, is at least spread out over a couple months rather than a couple weeks in the fall! In early March the flowering dogwoods begin to bloom, in April the Tulips arrive, followed by Cherry Blossoms in May and Lavender in June!

"You charge too much"
"Would you do it for exposure?"
"I can find it cheaper"
"Can we use your work to make money for our business"
"Can you do friends and family?"

There is a reason we are called starving artists. Because the world wants to feast on our work and not leave us a crumb.

The value of our work is priceless, but no one wants to pay a price. We create profit, but they want to take ours.

Brands want free pictures, friends want free pictures, photographers want free education from other photographers.

How many brands have asked me for free pictures? The very pictures that sell their products? Too many to name, small names, big names... other artists with small businesses.....

How many photographers have complained about other photographer's education prices? The same ones who complain about their clients haggling for lower prices.....

Pictures create profit. Who asks others to pay for their advertising? It's tacky.

No one pays for our ads. No one pays for our equipment. No one is volunteering to compensate us for our 12-15 hour days.

No one goes to their Doctor and says "Hey, will you do this visit for free if I tag you in a post?" Stop asking us.

It gets old. We are tired and we are hungry.

If you don't want to pay the price, that's perfectly fine. Stop trying to negotiate other people's value. Don't comment on it. Don't message about it. Move along.

Let us eat.

I've been working on updating & refreshing my website(s) during the "slow season"....
I've been adding gorgeous spring images to remind prospective clients that spring / summer portrait season is upon us AND
Hot Pro Tip: our pink dogwoods are already blooming, white dogwoods aren't far behind and I've been seeing tons of spring flowers! The Biltmore Tulips as well as the Tulip farm will be in bloom in early April, the cherry blossoms and Azaleas are right behind that so if you'd like some portraits with beautiful spring blooms, now's the time to book it! xo
