This winter morning view from my back door at the farm of a stand of trees beneath Peter Hill always reminds me of Sylvia Plimack Mangold's works of trees and my 4th grade elementary achool teacher. I had the fortune of meeting Ms. Mangold and her husband very briefly while volunteering at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford many winters ago. My fascination with the tones and the simple beauty of her paintings drew me to purchase the exhibition catalogue which she graciously signed for me and which I still have.

There are some pretty craggly old pine trees on that hill. They stand out, some times hovering above the deciduous tree line. Inevitably, pine trees almost always lead to a quick thought about Miss Baum, my 4th grade teacher, who took the opportunity to leverage her name as a kind of personal brand of sorts and was quite the promoter of all things trees - especially pine trees. Our school plays, songs and assignments showed it with arbor day being the highlight of the year. This love for trees definitely absorbed a great deal of her heart, leaving little available to be shared with a classroom of 8 and 9 year old children (or so it seemed). She could have quite a temper and was known for wizzing erasers (yes we still had blackboards then!) and other antics. I was quite surprised (and oddly proud and maybe a little confused?) when, at the end of the school year, she gave me a small, green leather pouch with an evergreen tree etched into the back flap. There was no reason provided to support the gesture. Just a smile and a well wish for the summer. I used the pouch for years to keep pencils and still have it in a box of childhood sentiments and papers in the attic.

We had the great pleasure of working with Dan Cooper, owner of who assisted with today's chuppah installation . Dan's got a great eye and I am looking forward to working with him to incorporate his historic lace panels into future arbor and cbuppah work. ,

Took advantage of the great weather and worked outside vs. in the workshop this weekend. Taking back some time to regroup before the next string of fall weddings which means farmstand will be open "by chance" for as long as the season holds out. , , ,
