It’s Fun Fact Friday🎉Zinnias…
As pretty as they are, they are dirty! Not like, inappropriate dirty, but Charlie Brown’s buddy Pig Pen dirty🥴 They muck up the water pretty quickly and if water isn’t changed out each day it will create bacteria that will lessen the life of your flowers. Why grow them if they’re so much trouble? They are beautiful!
Zinnias are easy to grow from seed and come in so many colors, sizes, and varieties. They are tough, thrive in the heat and when cut at the right time, can last 7-10 days in a vase.
Some will last longer than others, but changing the water every day and making a fresh diagonal cut to the stems will definitely extend the life of the bouquet.
Yes, it’s a bit more work, but queens just need that extra attention 👑

Fun Fact Friday!!
Breadseed Poppy seeds are tiny! They are easy to grow, and if left to dry in the garden, will bless you with poppyseeds forever 😂 Each pod that develops after flowering contains dozens of seeds. These pods can be used in arrangements (before drying) and also dried to retain the seeds or for dried arrangements and for baking. There are thousands of recipes for poppy seeds. My favorite is lemon poppyseed bread…with lemon glaze, of course😋
What’s your favorite recipe for poppyseeds?

Love-in-a-mist (Nigella)…
This was a new plant added this year. The little balloons develop into unique, airy flowers and from there to pods. A great addition to a cutting garden! I read that the seeds inside the pods are edible and have the taste of grape Koolaid. I’ll have to try them. Stay tuned!

The life of the Starflower Scabiosa…
It has a paper-like textured seed pod when left to fully develop. It is a fun addition to mixed bouquets and can also be great when dried for arrangements.

I’ve learned something about the sunshine, besides my windows are filthy🥴
We all need the sun to grow, inside and out. Living in the PNW it can be pretty daunting, with gray skies and oodles of rain for months on end.
That bright yellow ball is an attitude changer. The warmth of it on your skin allows you to get outside and take it in, breathe deeper, and connect with the earth, the world, your neighbors, whatever it may be. It’s a great feeling!
Today I sent out my first “sunshine” of the year! It was great to get the bright yellow daffodils out before the snow level drops again and the rains ensue.
Flowers can have the same joyous feelings as enjoying a sunny day!
Spring is almost here! Let the fun begin😎

This is Yarrow. It comes in many colors, from white, yellows, pinks, and reds. It can be used medicinally, as well as a great bouquet filler. It has great long stems that outlast many other fillers, and is also easy to dry.
Yarrow needs to be contained, as it’s a sneaky spreader, but so worth it. I’m excited to try new colors! Stay tuned!!

This is Cinnamon Basil. It has a sweet, spicy scent that is a great addition to any bouquet. It’s also used in recipes, as it has a great cinnamon and anise flavor in salads, desserts, and tea. Its smell stops me each time I go near, reminding me of being in my grandmas kitchen, just waiting for her fresh cups of custard topped with cinnamon. It’s amazing how a smell can trigger memories.

What scents trigger your brain to remember a time gone by?

Today’s post is brought to you by Mud, Sweat, and Tears.
Put these raised beds together and got them filled by hand, as it’s too wet for the tractor. That’s where the Mud and Sweat came in. The Tears are reserved for when I try to move later.
You do what ya gotta do!

Read that again!!!

It took me 50 years to figure out that I’m not everyone’s “cup of tea”. I think I’m pretty funny, but I guess my snarkiness isn’t for everyone 🤷🏼‍♀️ We will all have our own roads to travel until our time is up, and once you realize that worrying about what others think or pleasing everyone else is a soul sucking task, you’ll be free.
Think free and do what makes you happy (as long as it’s legal).
I used this mantra to start my flower business and hope I’m making others happy by doing it. If not, move along! I’ve got flowers to grow💐

Funny story…not funny haha, but if you can visualize one of my portable greenhouses flying through the air and landing in the neighbors yard (over 500 yards away) like a kite, then you can laugh with me. We get a lot of wind, not just a breeze, but gale force at times. I should have known better, but thought I had it secured. Clearly not!
Someday I’ll get a real greenhouse, but until then if you see anything random floating from my direction just duck and cover!
Disclaimer…wind noise is to give you the full effect and Toto was not harmed. 🌪️

I’ve never been a fan of Winter. I hate to be cold. This last day of January was actually pretty mild. We’ve had some extremely cold, rainy, windy, and then unseasonably warm days during this month. I’ll confess, I’m not sad to see it go.

On a positive note, those cold, windy days forced me to stay inside and get my flower season planned and my tax prep (yuck) going. I guess it was for my own good.

Did you get things accomplished in January?

Today was a tease of Spring. It was in the low 60s. After freezing temps a few weeks ago and monsoon rain the last few days, it was great to get outside. The daffodils are peaking out and the frogs are singing frog songs. Looking forward to the real Spring! Only 51 more days🎉

Planning out this years garden rows and extension of more raised beds (Don’t tell my husband🤫). It’s like making a wedding reception seating chart for people that can’t get along. Doing successions also adds drama to the mix. It will work out. I just way overthink it🤔
Do just throw seeds in or plan it out?

Some questions I’ve been asked since I started my business:

1. Aren’t you a little old to be doing this?
Some days I’d definitely say yes, but for the most part I feel that if you keep learning, and moving, it keeps you young…at heart, anyways.
2. What’s the goal of this business?
My goal is to grow top quality fresh flowers to sell locally through subscriptions, retail at local shops, special occasions, and diy wedding flowers.
3. What’s your background in flower farming?
I have just finished my first year as a flower farmer, but have been growing flowers for over 30 years. I started my “career” as a young child selling daffodils with my family at a roadside stand back in the 1970’s.
4. Is flower farming as glamorous as it looks?
It’s hardly glamorous. There are many days in the muck, rain, wind, insects, slugs, and moles, covering bulbs and blooms from freezes, not to mention the heat. Oh, and the hours are before dawn to after sunset. The gorgeous flowers make it all worthwhile though.
5. What flowers will you be growing this year?
I’ll be growing Sweet Peas, Dahlias, Tulips, Cosmos, Zinnias, Snapdragons, Sunflowers, and as many more as my space allows.
6. How do your subscriptions work?
The subscriptions are broken down into seasons—Spring, Summer, and Fall. Whether one is purchased for a gift or for yourself, I gather the information of the recipient and deliver to their door a fresh bouquet every other week for 6 weeks. I deliver from Astoria to Seaside.
7. Do you also sell retail?
Where?
I do. I’m hoping to have three locations this year. I’ll post once I get those confirmed.
8. Do you do weddings?
I do not do weddings. I do, however, offer buckets of what’s blooming to brides at the time of their wedding so they can use them the way they wish.
Please message me with any questions. I look forward to hearing from you! 💐

As I’m going through my seed collection and catalogs, I can’t help but get excited to see what I can grow this year. Oh, I’ll kill things for sure, but am dreaming of all the seedlings I can see bloom, the bouquets I can make, and the love of flowers I can share.

I feel like this daffodil. I’m resilient and ready to show what I can do!
The possibilities are endless but I’m making decisions on what worked last year, what didn’t, and what new I want to try. I’m listening to podcasts, watching videos, and reading what I can to do things right. I’m an overthinker by nature, so the struggle is real. Each climate is different, each year is different, and the only thing that I know for sure is that I’m a one woman show and the days will be long and exhausting, but bring me a joy that I’ve never found anywhere else.

What are you doing to get through these cold months?
