Next in the team line up, Silver joined us as a designer literally the week before Valentine’s Day. To say she got thrown into the deep end to sink or swim is an understatement. Luckily for all of us she learns quickly, gets work done quickly and up for challenges.

Silver is a recent transplant, moving to Ilwaco with her husband who is a chef in the Coast Guard. Silver started her floral career in a busy corporate flower shop on a large military base a few years ago and was quickly promoted into a manager position because of her ability to learn quickly. Since joining our team she has been fine tuning her knowledge and skills, transforming her basic design experience into artistic arrangements.

When Silver is not in the shop, you can often find her taking walks on the beach with her two dogs.

Silver has two favorite flowers, lilacs and chocolate cosmos

I have been way overdue posting any introductions of my fabulous crew. So, the next couple of days I will introduce you to each one of the people who make this business run. I would not be able to do what we do without them.

First up, Amie! She’s been with me for just over a year already! (Time flies!) Amie is my plant expert. She is a wealth of knowledge, way more than I could hope to retain. She does a fabulous job taking great care of our plant babies.

Amie has been in the business longer than I have in just about every facet of the floral industry from the flower market, new seasons floral department, plant nursery, mortuary, flower farm, floral design institute and traditional flower shops. That wealth of experience brings so much valuable knowledge into her designs. If you are curious about anything related to our industry she will probably know the answer.

You can usually find Amie in the shop Monday-Wednesday and Saturday. On her days off she’s most likely snuggling with her menagerie of animals and caring for her plants in Clatskanie.

Amie’s favorite plant is Einkorn, a type of Wheat and the first plant that our species ever planted. 🌾

Where do you find your inspiration? Do you take regular time to be inspired and let it influence your work? I would love to hear some of your favorite spots in the comments. 👇

is mine this week. My dad is one of the architects on the project and has been holding off retirement to see this through construction. If you haven’t seen the new expansion you are in for a treat. The gorgeous 9 acre ceiling was all made from wood grown within 300 miles of Portland. The sawdust from making the beams was used in making the plywood for the walls. Even the flooring is Oregon white oak. Every detail of the design was inspired by the state we live in and celebrates it to the max.

Over the last couple of years we have been making changes to how we operate, where we buy our products and how we affect our environment. We still have lots of areas of improvement but it excites me to see the improvements we are collectively making as a society.

Areas we have improved:
-Most of our flowers are grown within 150 miles of Astoria which cuts down on fuel use, plastics that flowers get shipped in and supports our local economy.
-Our gift items come from other small businesses, mostly US made.
-We have switched to more environmentally friendly containers, bamboo card picks and are continually looking for and testing new products and techniques to improve in this area.
-We live in a botanically gorgeous area and we let that nature inspire our designs.

Happy Father’s Day to all you amazing dads out there!

This holiday has brought some thoughts I want to share. Call it a PSA. Men may not say it or even realize it but they love receiving flowers too. It’s always so sad for me to see men uncomfortable in our store like they are in a lingerie store and they shouldn’t be there. Why has society taught men they can’t love flowers too!?! We had a guy come in twice in the last week to buy flowers to add to his hat and it made my heart so happy to see.
Ken and I are at a life stage where we don’t really care as much what other people think about our passions and loves. We are leaning into them more than ever while also braking the chains we feel from social expectations and it’s so freeing.

It’s routine now. Nina picks out her emotional support flowers at market. Sandra lets her pick an older bunch that needs some extra love because she says she wants Nina to love flowers. I think she does. 💕

If there was one thing I’ve been forced to learn this year, it’s mental health care. I’ve wanted to throw in the towel many times this year. In this economy I have to push myself harder, work harder to take home less and it’s taking a toll. Because of that I’m learning to slow down when I can, enjoy the moments with my daughter like basking in the joy and beauty of a flower, taking social media breaks, making sure I get regular grounding moments outside preferably at the lake, time talking with friends, etc. Ken made a comment last week after I crashed hard from a busy month that I’ve been “Sisu-ing too close to the sun”! (If you’re a Finn you know.)😂 He knows me. I push till I collapse. I give all of me to make sure everyone around me gets what they need at my own expense.
So, I’m reminding myself and you to take those brakes. Buy yourself a flower. Do what fills your soul. Lay in the grass and get grounded and enjoy this beautiful earth.

Congratulations to all the graduates! 🎉

I love Astoria and being a part of this community. I have lived most of my life in Portland where you get lost in the sea of people so the intimacy of a smaller community energizes me.
That being said, having a small business in a small community is a struggle to make ends meet. I was venting recently to a fellow business owner about my struggles and he graciously gave me some money to fund another drawing! How sweet is that! 💕 So, for the month of April, come in and spend $50 or more and get entered into a $100 gift certificate drawing! Nina and I will draw a lucky winner at the end of the month.
