The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and vocalist Ashley Pezzotti brought yuletide joy to Hodgson Concert Hall on Monday night on the first stop of their "Big Band Holidays" tour. Three returning favorites from last year's performance as well as one new (to us) singer will join the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chamber Chorus for the performance on December 16: Soprano Maria Valdes, mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor, tenor Miles Mykkanen, and bass-baritone Lawson Anderson. This week we celebrated Día de los Mu***os (The Day of the Dead) with Mariachi Sol de México de José Hernández. The band gave two sold out performances in Hodgson Concert Hall, including one for local youth and children. The energy was high and virtuosity was on full display as they brought beloved mariachi music to Athens. ¡Viva México!

The 12th annual Spotlight on the Arts Festival will showcase the visual, performing, and literary arts on campus with more than 60 events and exhibitions throughout November. Many Spotlight events are free or discounted for students, and the public is welcome. A complete schedule of events for Spotlight on the Arts 2023 is available online at arts.uga.edu.

Earlier this month, we welcomed the legendary Indigo Girls to Hodgson Concert Hall for two sold out performances in collaboration with the UGA Symphony Orchestra. Conducted by Mark Cedel, the Hugh Hodgson School of Music's flagship orchestra brought lush, vibrant sounds to the singing duo's iconic songs. Amy Ray and Emily Saliers have a long history in Athens, and we were honored to be part of it by welcoming them to our stage for this very special event.

Last week, our new Hamburg Steinway piano made its official debut in a recital by the outstanding pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason. She brought beautiful music to Hodgson Concert Hall with great clarity and joy. Prior to the performance, "Performance Today" host Fred Child gave a pre-concert talk during his first-ever visit to Athens. This free event was a gift to our community, and we appreciate all who helped make it possible and everyone who attended!

The Emerson String Quartet plays its final performance this weekend in New York City. We've been fortunate to have presented this outstanding ensemble at UGA several times over the years, most recently in January 2023 as part of the group's farewell tour (pictured) and in September 2018 as part of a program with Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. It's the end of an era, and we're glad to have been a part of it! Bravo!

As our 2023-24 Artist in Focus, we look forward to welcoming her back to Hodgson Concert Hall on January 29 with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
