Thank you for following along with us as we celebrate 30 years of The Classic Center! This week we look at the past few years leading up to where we are now.

2020 - 2024: In 2020, The Classic Center Theatre underwent renovations, and in 2021, Broadway returned to the Theatre after COVID. In 2022, we broke ground on The Classic Center Arena, in 2023, the B-52s played their farewell tour at The Classic Center Theatre, and in 2024, Akins Ford Arena opened!

GeorgiaForward recently selected The Classic Center's Convention & Conference Sales Executive, Alison Melvin, and Director of Sales for Visit Athens GA, Elyse Worthey-Harris, as two of the 49 promising professionals to serve the organization’s 2025 Young Gamechangers (YG) program. YG is a unique leadership action program hosted by GeorgiaForward, a non-profit organization administrated by the Georgia Municipal Association. Young Gamechangers brings professionals from across the state to work on the persistent challenges of one Georgia community.

In 2025, the City of Athens and Clarke County will host the Young Gamechangers. Local leaders have finalized their four “Challenge Questions” that the 2025 cohort will be charged to answer during the eight months focused on Athens, developing specific, actionable recommendations for the community. These questions focus on community impact, the town-gown relationship, economic disparity, and regional growth.

“Each year, our Young Gamechangers, through the energy and innovation of our state’s best minds, help improve our cities and counties,” said Amir Farokhi, chair of GeorgiaForward’s board of directors. “This year, we are excited and grateful to partner with Athens-Clarke County. Great ideas come from all over Georgia, and we cannot wait to see our Young Gamechangers in action.”

Students interested in getting a behind-the-scenes look at the hospitality industry have the opportunity through The Classic Center’s Hospitality Careers Academy. HCA provides attendees with hands-on learning when planning an event. Students will gain experience in hospitality, marketing, culinary, event planning, stage production, and more. The Classic Center is northeast Georgia's premier award winning convention center and performing arts theatre. Located in the heart of downtown Athens, Georgia, The Classic Center provides unique meeting space, outstanding special events services and a wide range of entertainment options, making this unconventional convention center the choice for conferences, meetings and special events! The Classic Center is under the auspices of The Classic Center Authority (CCA), a political subdivision of the state government, created on March 10, 1988, as enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Georgia. The five-member CCA board of directors is appointed by the Athens-Clarke County Commission.
