~ New Beginnings ~..The Big Chop

My hair journey has been a challenge since my tween years. I remember in the early stages of my life, between the ages of about 6 and 12, when I had a full head of healthy hair, my braids would sometimes be so tight, the hair along my edges revealed the top of my roots/follicles.

My mom thought it was dandruff and one of our favorite pastimes while she braided my hair, became plucking a hair or two from my edges and separating the dandruff (root) from the hair strands. Neither of us the wiser at the time. It wasn't until my edges started thinning that mom realized our plucking pasttime had to stop.

So, throughout my teenage and early adult years, I had very thin edges. I visited a dermatologist for a skin biopsy during my early 20s to determine the problem and it was confirmed that due to the pulling and tugging of braids (and plucking), my hair follicles wouldn't recover.

I managed to find styles that worked well to camouflage the thining. And then, in 2012, I decided, after much encouragement from the hubby, to loc my hair. It was a wonderful decision and I loved the journey and convenience of easy maintenance, but soon, both my diet (increasing intolerance to lactose I'm sure) and stress level from life's little traumas, caused more rapid hair loss. My locs were also very long and heavy, so the added weight (especially after a wash) exacerbated the problem.

It has been weighing heavily on my spirit to cut my locs since 2020 and now, 4 years later, I boldly made . It couldn't have come at a better time. 🫡🙏🏾😊
