We love getting to experience flowers and their beauty in so many different forms. Each crown is made with naturally dried flowers grown by incredible flower farmers in Massachusetts 🚜 Enjoy your flower crown for 2+ years!

🌸 What an unforgettable experience! 🌸

This year, I had the honor of competing for the first time in the Botanical Arts Division at the 29th Annual Newport Flower Show, “A Floral Fair.” I’m thrilled to share I placed 2nd in my class: Beauty & the Beast! 🌹✨

Our prompt:
"This fairy tale touches on inner beauty. Outward appearances may deceive; true beauty lies within." – Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve (1740)
The task: Create a rose using dried or pressed botanicals.

Our category was Form, challenging us to replicate a rose from plant material unrelated to roses - a creative stretch I loved! I dove into the original 1740 tale, the Disney classic, and the grandeur (and contradictions) of the Gilded Age. I wanted my piece to explore themes of knowledge, power, and illusions of wealth.

Inspired by the Golden Ratio & Fibonacci sequence, my design nods to mathematical harmony amid opulence masking inequality. I echoed the start of the sequence with:
1 rose head, 1 petal near falling, 2 leaves, 3 thorns, 5 sepals, 8 fallen petals.

Countless sketches, experiments, and late-night brainstorms later, I landed on this combination:

🌿Petals: Raphanus sativus (white radish)
🌿Leaves & Sepals: Ruscus aculeatus (butcher’s broom)
🌿Stem: Salix matsudana (willow) + Vitis vinifera (grapevine)
🌿Thorns: Syzygium aromaticum (clove)

My Statement of Intent:
"This golden ratio holds steady as illusions unravel. It reveals quiet resistance and speaks what opulence masks. The rose dies while we watch."

Grateful beyond words to my family, friends, partner, judges, and fellow competitors for your support and inspiration. This experience reminded me: if you don’t try, you’ll never know.

I’m so honored to be part of this storied event, and I can’t wait to share more about the meaning and process behind my piece inspired by Theresa Fair Oelrichs 1913 fairy tale-themed dinner. 🥀🌹

Such a magical weekend 💕🌞

Thank you for having us , we had such a wonderful morning creating custom dried flower crowns, getting us ready for everything that has bloomed in the past week 🤩 It is so special create something so beautiful together 💕

The magic continued with a fairy garden terrarium class at the next day! Using a variety of seemingly "random" materials, we discussed ways we can shift our perspective to give unassuming materials a new life. I really am ready to move into those houses asap! 😆

I am truly at a loss for words, seeing something that has lived in my head for so long finally come to life at the ’s Flora in Winter feels like a dream.

This piece is deeply inspired by 's stunning “Wall at WAM” mural, and I wanted to create something that felt like stepping into a fairy garden, where the colors; soft pinks, whites, blues, and earthy browns, mirror the beauty of her work. After reading about her process, the symbolism behind her piece, and the emotions it evokes, I felt such a profound admiration for her and knew I wanted to honor her vision in my own way.

This moment wouldn’t have been possible without my unbelievable support system. To my mom, dad, and Shannon - installing this beast together was nothing short of magic, and you all make playing with flowers even more joyful. A special shout out to my dad, who spent his birthday helping install this piece. It meant the world to have you there making this vision a reality with us. There are no words to express how much I love and appreciate you all. To my siblings, my boyfriend, and my in-laws - you are the foundation of Sam’s Stems, and I am endlessly grateful for all you do.

A huge thank you to the Worcester Art Museum for trusting Sam’s Stems to be part of Flora in Winter for the very first time, and to the incredibly talented for believing in me and connecting me with the amazing team behind it all.

No spoilers yet, but just know we've been deeply inspired by the incredible , and we can't wait for you to see what we've created!

While you’re welcome to visit anytime during the weekend, I’ll personally be attending the "After Hours" event on Saturday, March 1, from 5–7 PM. With live music, drinks, and breathtaking floral displays, it’s the perfect excuse to dress up and make a night of it! No strict dress code, just an open invitation to finally wear that outfit you've been waiting for the right occasion to debut.
