Sundilla Concert Series & Radio Hour

Sundilla Concert Series & Radio Hour In 2023 we celebrated 30 years of bringing the best musicians from around the world to Auburn, AL... and we're still going strong! Don't be this person!

(And be sure to check out our syndicated radio show!) Somewhere, there is probably someone who lived in England in 1960 who turned down a chance to go to The Cavern Club because he had never heard of the band. "The band" in question was, of course, The Beatles. They went on to have a bit of success in the music business; enough success that the guy who didn't want to go see them play because he ha

d never heard of them is still kicking himself black-and-blue 40 years later. So when you're trying to decide whether or not you want to drag yourself out to see some unknown play at Sundilla, just remind yourself that every musician was once an unknown, and that every musician who sells out arenas for hundreds of dollars per ticket once played somewhere for under ten bucks. And someone who paid hundreds of dollars to sit in the last row of an arena once turned down the chance to sit on the first row of a small venue for next to nothing.

There might not be another Sundilla Concert Series & Radio Hour concert until we kick off next year's season on January 9, but that doesn't mean that there are no can't-miss musical opportunities until then. Like this one!

It was No Depression who first called Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road "the future of bluegrass," but they are not alone in their praise. Others have said:

"Their skill is clearly unquestionable" - Bluegrass Today

"Deeply rooted in traditional bluegrass, their songs boldly and progressively interpret classic songs" - The Bluegrass Standard

"Making their mark on bluegrass and fueling the future" - Bluegrass Unlimited

It starts up front with Liam Purcell. In 2022, Purcell shook the bluegrass world by sweeping the Rockygrass Instrumental Championships in Colorado, taking home first place honors on mandolin, banjo, and guitar. He is the only person to ever achieve a simultaneous victory in multiple championships.

Before that, he and the band had seen multiple entries on the Billboard Top 10 Bluegrass charts, performed in 25 states, and were recognized by the International Bluegrass Music Association as the Momentum Band of the Year. After that, he graduated from Berklee College of Music.

The future is here... and you can see them tonight!

It's hard to talk about Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road without mentioning how young Liam is. He graduated from Berklee College of Music in May 2024, but that was just the latest in a long line of accomplishments. By the time Purcell was 17, the project had seen multiple entries on the Billboard Top 10 Bluegrass charts, performed in 25 states, and was recognized by the International Bluegrass Music Association as the Momentum Band of the Year. In 2022, Purcell shook the bluegrass world by sweeping the Rockygrass Instrumental Championships in Colorado, taking home first place honors on mandolin, banjo, and guitar. He is the only person to ever achieve a simultaneous victory in multiple championships. Even being a college students didn't slow him down; Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road performed over 80 dates per year around an academic schedule, and Liam managed to write and record an album, which led to a recording contract with Pinecastle Records.

And on Friday, Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road, "the future of bluegrass" according to No Depression, make their first appearance at Sundilla Concert Series & Radio Hour. Years from now you can say you saw them in their early years... but only if you come to the AUUF on Friday, November 7.

Five long days until LIAM PURCELL & CANE MILL ROAD in concert at Sundilla? It will be here before you know it! Showtime this Friday at the AUUF (450 E. Characterized by No Depression as “the future of bluegrass”, Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road twine innovation, tradition, and excellence into a unique musical experience. Though only in his 22nd year, North Carolina’s Liam Purcell has already established a name for himself in the world of American Stringband music. Growing up less than a mile away from the legendary guitarist Doc Watson, Purcell was steeped in Appalachian Old-Time and Bluegrass traditions. Taking inspiration from the local Deep Gap legacy, Liam began writing, performing, and storytelling from an early age.

Entering the professional bluegrass circuit during his teenage years, Purcell formed the stringband-supergroup Cane Mill Road. He would go on to lead the virtuosic ensemble through regional appearances, building a fanbase across the Southeast and bringing his homespun rapport to some of the most revered festivals in the scene. By the time Purcell was 17, the project had seen multiple entries on the Billboard Top 10 Bluegrass charts, performed in 25 states, and was recognized by the International Bluegrass Music Association in 2019 as the Momentum Band of the Year.

Departing his native Appalachia, Purcell took up residence in Boston while attending Berklee College of Music, following in the footsteps of Molly Tuttle, Infamous Stringdusters, Sierra Hull, Crooked Still, and many others who came out of the College’s famed American Roots Program. Despite the rigorous course of study, Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road performed over 80 dates per year around an academic schedule. In 2022, Purcell shook the bluegrass world by sweeping the Rockygrass Instrumental Championships in Colorado, taking home first place honors on mandolin, banjo, and guitar. He is the only person to ever achieve a simultaneous victory in multiple championships.

Halloween is over so it's all treats and no tricks, and the first big treat happens next Friday, November 7 with LIAM PURCELL & CANE MILL ROAD in concert at Sundilla. Showtime at the AUUF (450 E. Thach Avenue in Auburn) is 7:30, and you can find Advance tickets for just $20 at Spicer's Music, LLC, Ross House Coffee, and online at www.sundillaconcerts.com. Fair warning: there is not enough room in this bio to include all of Liam Purcell’s accomplishments and accolades. But here are a few highlights: No Depression characterizes Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road as “the future of bluegrass.” By the time Purcell was 17, the project had seen multiple entries on the Billboard Top 10 Bluegrass charts, performed in 25 states, and was recognized by the International Bluegrass Music Association as the Momentum Band of the Year.
In 2022, Purcell shook the bluegrass world by sweeping the Rockygrass Instrumental Championships in Colorado, taking home first place honors on mandolin, banjo, and guitar. He is the only person to ever achieve a simultaneous victory in multiple championships. An impressive feat no matter what... but even moreso considering that Liam didn't even graduate from Berklee College of Music until 2024!
