The First Black Woman To Win An Academy Award!

Born June 10, 1893, in Wichita, Kansas, Hattie McDaniel made history as the first Black person to win an Academy Award, claiming the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her unforgettable role as Mammy in Gone with the Wind (1939).

Despite the racial barriers of Hollywood’s Golden Age, McDaniel paved the way for Black actors, using her talent, resilience, and charisma to break down doors in an industry that often tried to keep her out. Though she faced discriminationβ€”even being forced to sit at a segregated table at the Oscarsβ€”her impact on cinema and representation remains undeniable and unforgettable.

Beyond the silver screen, she was a trailblazer in radio, music, and activism, fighting for better opportunities for Black performers. McDaniel passed away on October 26, 1952, but her legacy of perseverance, excellence, and courage lives on. She didn’t just actβ€”she changed the game.
