Meet the SEEDS artist
Emily Bender
Grovetown, GA

Emily Bender is a designer and artist focusing on fiber art, murals and digital art in the Southeast with over a decade of experience in the design world. In previous roles, she worked as a content creator, graphic designer and marketing specialist for several companies before starting her own agency – Em Bender Designs. Bender’s personal style can be described as colorful, eclectic and joyful, as she loves for her art to spark happiness in every way. This aesthetic trends towards the maximalist, with layered textures, rich colors, and pops of visual interest. Bender pulls inspiration from her upbringing on a rural sheep farm, perpetual trips to hole-in-the-wall antique shops, world travels far and wide, and connections to other artisans, photographers and designers. Bender’s goal is to bring joy to her community through art while lending a hand to those who would like to do the same.

The name “Ghost Town” comes from a time Russell was living outside of Detroit and spending a lot of time, both solo and with friends, exploring the many abandoned factories and buildings of the city. He has always been fascinated with empty spaces and those that have been forgotten. To be able to enter a place like that, to learn it’s history, and to try to put together some of the pieces of a place’s past will always be something that Russell loves. “Ghost Town” is a combination of his past experiences with his current life in an illustrated form. Over the last decade, Russell has spent time developing a style based off of early 1900’s black and white cartoons blended with a more modern twist of both imagery and events. Using clean lines and vibrant emotion, the pieces themselves are rather straightforward with their interpretations being delivered to the viewers more plainly. Russell’s artwork functions as a space to allow folks feel relaxed and happy.

It is with much regret that we are canceling our WestoBOO!Bash this year that was scheduled for October 25th. The “End of the World” theme was meant to be fun, but the timing isn’t right with our city still reeling from Hurricane Helene. Refunds have been issued to all our friends who bought tickets. We still will be giving out candy for Trick or Treat on Broad St. and will open Seeds in November as planned!

UN*broken is a visual exploration of the resilience and strength of women in the face of adversity. This exhibition delves into the complex themes of abuse, harassment, and subjugation, as well as the constraints imposed by traditional gender roles and the physical and emotional scars left by trauma.

UN*broken offers a narrative of women casting off the chains to reclaim their own identities. By exploring themes of healing, resilience, and reclamation, this exhibition invites viewers to engage in a dialogue that fosters empathy, understanding, and a collective commitment to healing and empowerment of those who have survived trauma.

American Patchwork Quartet_Promo

Westobou presents An Evening with American Patchwork Quartet on March 19th at 7:30 pm at Le Chat Noir. NYC-based American Patchwork Quartet (APQ) is on a mission to reclaim the immigrant soul of American Roots Music. They showcase America’s dynamic present by combining the diverse talents of four U.S. citizens, each with a unique cultural background. In this quartet, old songs are made new through creative arrangements that highlight the exceptional and well-honed skills of each band member.

🌿Westobou is now accepting submissions for LUSH, a juried planter & vase exhibition. 🌿 This exhibition is meant to explore how sculpture and flora intersect, asking the artists to imagine a fantasy ecosystem that not only houses the organic element, but commemorates the beauty and history of it through composition, proximity, and relationship. All ceramic and mixed material artworks, functional and sculptural, are eligible if they can house a live plant and exist in a greenhouse for the duration of the exhibition. We will consider form, concept, and function. We are looking for planters of any kind that push the aesthetic boundaries of the typical planter or vase form. With Westobou’s support, juror’s Sydney Ewerth and Paul Maloney will curate an exhibition of planters to be displayed in a greenhouse at Bedford Greenhouses in Augusta, GA. Bedford Greenhouses will supply the flora that best pairs with each piece accepted into the exhibition.
