Join us for the annual Harris-Horizon Jazz Concert on Saturday, November 16, 2024 at 7PM at the Maxwell Theatre. The Herlin Riley Quartet, joins the distinguished lists of jazz greats to play Maxwell as part of this annual celebration.

Since coming of age in the nurturing environment of a very musical family and a distinguished bloodline of drummers, New Orleans native Herlin Riley emerged from that most creative era of all things rhythmic in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, to enliven the ensembles of such influential and demanding improvisers as pianist Ahmad Jamal and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis through his commanding yet elegant rhythmic presence.

His authoritative style of melodic percussion is deeply imbued in the fertile creative soil of the Crescent City, encompassing as it does the entire length and breadth of America’s ongoing musical journey.

Awarded as the recent Winner and Audience Prize recipient of the 2023 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition in New York, ArcoStrum became the first-ever violin-guitar duo to win in its competition's 72-year history. ArcoStrum consists of three-times international First Prize-winning violinist Strauss Shi (violin, erhu, dizi), and the Grand Prize winner of Guitar Foundation of America - International Concert Artist Competition (GFA-ICAC), TY Zhang (classical guitar, electric guitar).

On stage, we are ArcoStrum. But offstage, we are two lifelong brothers that treasure the destiny of our unspoken chemistry, unbridled creativity, and the timeless art of profound music. Our duo is founded on our eagerness and mission to redefine the 21st century violin-guitar art form through our self-produced, original transcriptions of well-known works, never-before-heard arrangements, and our unique blend of our Chinese-Western instrumentations.

ARTISTS:
• Strauss Shi (violin, erhu, dizi),
•TY Zhang (classical guitar, electric guitar).
